- Police are believed to be investigating whether it was a ‘mercy killing’
A devoted husband has been arrested on suspicion of murder over a suspected ‘mercy killing’ of his elderly wife.
Frank Long, 80, was arrested after the body of his wife Mavis, 78, was discovered at their bungalow last Friday.
Police discovered Mrs Long’s body when they were called to the couple’s whitewashed bungalow in the quiet village of Pennant, near Aberaeron, West Wales.
Neighbours claim she had been ill for several years and it is understood police are probing whether she died in a ‘mercy killing’ but this has not been confirmed.
Retired engineer Mr Long has been freed on police bail as police continue their investigation.

The pensioners had lived in their home together for 25 years – but neighbours said they were very private people.
A tribute from Mrs Long’s family said: ‘This was an extremely tragic incident in which we have lost Mavis, who was loved and will be sorely missed.
‘We would like to thank the local community for all their kind words and support at this difficult time.
‘We would now like time to grieve and would ask for privacy in which to do so.’
One man said: ‘I hadn’t seen them for many years as they kept themselves to themselves.
‘First we we heard that she had gone missing but then we heard she had been found dead. It’s a horrible surprise for such a quiet place.
‘We hardly see any police around here so a murder inquiry is very strange.’
Local councillor Dafydd Edwards said: ‘My first reaction is one of concern for the family, but without knowing the facts it’s very difficult to comment further.
‘The family in question have lived in the area for a long time and are extremely well respected in the village.’
A spokeswoman for Dyfed Powys Police said an investigation was launched after Mrs Long was found dead last Friday.
She said: ‘An 80-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the death, and has been released on bail pending further police enquiries.
‘People living in the area will be aware of an increased police presence.
‘We would like to reassure the community that the police are not currently looking for anyone else in connection with the death.’
