The first to the sixth floor were alight but the cause of the fire is still unknown.
Residents have been evacuated from nearby flats and the Met Police has put road closures in place.
Station Manager Andy Maloney is at the scene and said: ‘Crews are continuing to work really hard to put the fire out.
‘Any residents who are affected by the fire are advised to go to the rest centre at Thames View Community Centre on Bastable Road. Transport is available from De Pass Gardens to take people there.’

Marcelo also indicated that ‘we are all OK’, a comment corroborated by London Ambulance, who said there were ‘no patients at this incident’.

Pictures show the devastation cause by the blaze as residents gather to watch flames consume the building
In the video, which appears to be filmed from a back garden, the sound of the flames devouring the building can clearly be heard.
De Pass Gardens is thought to be part of Riverside Gardens, a recent development by house builder Bellway Homes.
Another Twitter user, Venilia Batista Amorim, claimed that residents informed the developer of the build that the structure wasn’t safe.
The London Fire Brigade appear to have extinguished most of the flames on the building
She tweeted: ‘Fire on the Barking Riverside estate. Huge!!! Serious!!! Only a couple of weeks after the residents association specifically asked the builders @Bellway_Homes who said the wood cladding was fire retardant and perfectly safe.’
Another video filmed from the same garden shows a fireman tackling the fire from a crane and a crowd of residents can be seen watching it from outside their front doors.
Another Twitter user posted a view of the blaze from what appeared to be a different side of the building, and said: ‘Fire at Barking river side need help.’
