A nature lover was left amazed after photographing an optical phenomenon – a shimmering sun halo.

John McGowan, 52, was walking with his partner Alison Cunningham, 55, at Beinn Eighe in the Highlands when she spotted the rare halo through her sunglasses.

Sun halos, or 22° halos as they are commonly known, are created by sunlight interacting with ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere.

Miss Cunningham, who has a degree in meteorology, recognised what it was and told her husband, who had his camera with him.

Father-of-one Mr McGowan who works at a cosmetics factory, turned down his aperture to snap the phenomenon on Saturday.

Mr McGowan, from Ardullie, said: ‘We like to hike and take photos. So we were walking up and my better half, who has a degree in meteorology, noticed the halo through her sunglasses. I was really surprised.

‘I grabbed my camera and turned the aperture right down to photograph the halo. I was quite happy with the shots.  I got a lot of photos to show the full effect.

‘Taking pictures of the sun can be really difficult because it is so bright but I’m happy I managed it.’
