A baby has died after choking on food at a Bright Horizons nursery in Edinburgh, it was revealed today.

The 10-month-old boy was being cared for at the nursery in the Corstorphine area of the Scottish capital on Tuesday when he fell ill while 

The baby was taken from the £1,300-a-month nursery to hospital – but died the following day.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: ‘Police in Edinburgh were contacted after a 10-month-old boy took unwell within a private nursery in the Corstorphine area of the city on Tuesday.

Nursery bosses expressed their grief today and said their thoughts were with the baby and his family

‘The child was taken to the Royal Hospital for Sick Children where he sadly passed away on Wednesday.

‘The death is being treated as unexplained, but not suspicious, and a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.’

A nursery spokesman added: ‘This is very upsetting and our thoughts are focused on the child and the family at this difficult time.

‘We are taking every possible action to find out what happened, and are co-operating fully with the authorities. The safety and wellbeing of the children in our care is our absolute priority.’

In a letter to parents, the nursery manager Miranda Anderson said: ‘Dear parents, I have some very sad news to share about the child who was taken to hospital on Tuesday.

‘He has passed away and our thoughts are with his family at this terrible time.

‘The staff team are naturally very upset and are receiving counselling.

‘We are therefore needing to close the nursery tomorrow and will provide updates later of any nurseries nearby that we can accommodate your children at should you require it. 

‘Thank you for all your continued support.’
