St. Elmo’s Fire television show in development at NBC by Drop Dead Diva creator Josh Berman

St. Elmo’s Fire was one of the Brat Pack’s iconic films.

And now it appears the 1985 hit will be getting the TV treatment. 

NBC has reportedly bought the rights and is now developing a modern adaption of the classic, according to Deadline.

The network has already committed to a script. 

Directed by Joel Schumacher, the original film is a coming of age tale about a group of friends adjusting to life after college and the responsibilities of adulthood.

It had a talent-packed cast which included rising stars like Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Andrew McCarthy, Demi Moore, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy and Mare Winningham,

Though it received tepid reviews, the picture was a cult success. It also raked in a respectable $37.8million at the box office.

St. Elmo’s Fire’s latest iteration will be brought to life by writer Josh Berman, who previously worked on Drop Dead Diva.

He will also executive produce the project through his Osprey Productions along with Chris King, whose last major project was Penny Dreadful.

Sony Pictures Television will produce, a sound choice seeing as its parent company’s film branch Columbia Pictures was the original studio.

Sony has made several attempts at crafting a TV version of St. Elmo’s Fire. 

Previous tries were arranged through ABC and E! to no avail.
