William and Harry had a furious row before charity polo match attended by Meghan, Kate and their children, claim palace aides and the Princes’ relationship ‘is at an all-time low

  • Harry and William had a ‘bitter war of words shortly before polo event last year’
  • They had a row shortly before playing against each other in front of their families
  • Claims emerged after princes denied William had ‘bullied’ Harry and Meghan
  • Sources also say that the relationship between princes is now at an all-time low

Prince William and Prince Harry‘s relationship is at an all-time low following a series of furious rows including a bust up before a polo event attended by their wives and children, according to royal sources.

The bond between the princes, who released a statement yesterday dismissing reports of William ‘bullying’ Harry and his wife Meghan Markle, has apparently not recovered after a falling out shortly after baby Archie’s birth last year.

Harry and William had a bitter war of words shortly before they were pictured at the King Power Royal Charity Polo Day at Billingbear Polo Club in Berkshire in July 2019 with their families, according to the source speaking to The Sun.

The latest claims come after Harry and William spent much of Monday afternoon at Sandringham with the Queen and Prince Charles to thrash out the Sussexes new role following their decision to quit the royal family.

Tensions are then said to have grown between the brothers over the past year, with William accusing Harry of ‘speaking rudely to staff’ and ‘changing’ personality.

Kate and Meghan are also said to have clashed over the way the Duchess of Sussex spoke to staff and she told her US-born sister-in-law after she ‘b*****ed’ a Kensington Palace worker: ‘That’s unacceptable, they’re my staff and I speak to them’.

But the Duke of Sussex reportedly believes that his brother and his wife Kate ‘never gave Meghan a chance’ – friends have said the rift between the two brothers is so deep now that it is unlikely to be repaired for the foreseeable future.

The King Power event was the first time the families had been seen together since Archie’s birth and both Harry and William played in a polo match for charity.

At the time, royal fans hailed the camaraderie between the brothers, as well as the excitement on Prince Louis’ face as he met his cousin Archie.

However, claims have now emerged that, despite the outward smiles, Harry and William had a furious row just before the event, the latest in a series of tense exchanges between them.

A source told the Sun: ‘It’s absolutely heartbreaking to see just how damaged William and Harry’s relationship has become.

‘They’ll always love each other as brothers, but right now things have never been so bad. William feels betrayed and let down by Harry.

‘Harry feels like William and Kate never gave Meghan a chance. And now they’re leaving the country in this state.’

William is believed to have warned Harry against marrying Meghan, while also feeling as if his brother’s relationship with the former actress had changed him.

Harry, meanwhile, chafed at his brother’s criticism and suggestion that he was rushing into his marriage.

It comes after William and Harry gave a rare display of public unity yesterday to condemn claims that the Duke of Sussex had been ‘bullied out’ of the Royal Family by his own brother.

Their joint statement described reports in The Times as ‘offensive and potentially harmful’ in light of their work on mental health.

It read: ‘Despite clear denials, a false story ran in a UK newspaper today speculating about the relationship between the Duke of Sussex and the Duke of Cambridge.

‘For brothers who care so deeply about the issues surrounding mental health, the use of inflammatory language in this way is offensive and potentially harmful.’

Rumours of strife between the brothers circled for much of last year, before Harry finally addressed them in his and Meghan’s ITV documentary with journalist Tom Bradby.

Asked to comment on rumours of a rift, Harry said: ‘Part of this role, part of this job and this family being under the pressure it is under, inevitably stuff happens.

‘But look, we are brothers, we will always be brothers. We are certainly on different paths at the moment but I will always be there for him and, as I know, he will always be there for me.’

He added: ‘We don’t see as much as we used to because we are so busy but I love him dearly and the majority of stuff is created out of nothing. As brothers, you have good days, you have bad days.’

The Duke of Cambridge had spoken of his sadness at the broken bond with Harry. ‘I’ve put my arm around my brother all our lives and I can’t do that any more; we’re separate entities,’ he told a friend according to The Sunday Times.

‘I’m sad about that. All we can do, and all I can do, is try and support them and hope the time comes when we’re all singing from the same page. I want everyone to play on the same team.’

Affectionate: Prince Harry placed a hand on his wife's lower back

Affectionate: Prince Harry placed a hand on his wife’s lower back, left, and spent time with his newborn son at the polo in July – but rumours of a row with his brother has emerged

When it was put to Harry last week that he needed to discuss his plans with William at least before ‘pressing the nuclear button’, he made clear he hadn’t any intention of doing so. Neither had it occurred to him that there would also be ramifications for the young Cambridge children, George, six, Charlotte, four, and Louis, just one. The siblings have only seen their cousin Archie, eight months, once or twice since he was born.

‘He is so caught up with his own problems and just hadn’t thought through how it would affect everyone else,’ said a source with intimate knowledge of the week’s events.

While sources close to William say he ‘does not recognise’ the quote in The Sunday Times, it is widely acknowledged it is ‘fairly close’ to what he is thinking. ‘Sadness, I’d say is the overwhelming emotion,’ said one source. ‘This is his brother, for God’s sake. He loves him. And he is desperately sad – and worried – that it has come to this. There’s an acknowledgement that things are very estranged at the moment. But maybe time and a little distance will heal that.’

While understandably concerned for his brother, William is also said to be worried about the increased workload the ‘abdication’ will bring for other family members.

Although now seventh in line to the throne, Harry and Meghan would still have undertaken more than 200 public engagements each year.

And even in the slimmed-down monarchy their father is hoping for, the Sussexes would have had a significant role. Privately, William and Harry have always felt the public perception of them as Diana’s ‘boys’ wedded together for the rest of their lives by tragedy was an anachronism. They have always had each other’s back, but have always had different ways of handling things – and different paths.

One source said the rot began after Harry left the military in 2015 and began to feel frustrated at his rather rootless existence compared to William’s clearly defined career path.

It was Kate who brought the brothers together, particularly as they collaborated on their mental health campaign, Heads Together. But others say it was just a plaster on a long-festering wound that was ripped off when Meghan came on the scene and Harry had his own family to defend.

The Mail understands while William feels both he and his brother have been deeply affected by Diana’s death, Harry seems unable to move on with his life.

The Queen approved Harry and Meghan’s desire to quit, although she admitted she was disappointed at their decision and wanted them to stay on as full-time working royals.

Harry and Meghan will now spend a ‘transitional period’ between Canada and the UK as the particulars of their new ‘progressive roles’ are worked out.
