Jim Wilson reveals the family tragedies which drove him to takeover 2GB’s drive-time radio spot

Jim Wilson reveals the heartbreaking family tragedies that drove him to takeover 2GB’s drive-time radio spot… and why he isn’t afraid to ‘rattle cages’ in the job

Former Channel Seven sports reporter Jim Wilson will start his new role as Sydney radio station 2GB’s drive-time host on Monday.

And at the weekend, the 52-year-old spoke candidly to The Daily Telegraph about the heartbreaking family tragedies that drove him to take the highly coveted job – and how he is hoping to use his public platform for good.

‘Having lost my son Sam at six to brain cancer and my sister Bec to breast cancer at 54, I want to absolutely raise the awareness that the funding from the government for research across the board is a disgrace,’ he told the publication.

Man with a mission: Former Channel Seven sports reporter Jim Wilson (pictured) revealed the family tragedies which drove him to takeover 2GB’s drive-time radio spot to The Daily Telegraph on the weekend – losing his son Sam and sister Rebecca to cancer

The husband of newsreader Chris Bath added he wouldn’t be afraid to tackle ‘hard issues’ or ‘rattle cages’ with his prime time spot.

‘One of the key pillars of my broadcasting in this show will be rattling cages and helping our great scientific brains and researchers get a better slice of the funding pie,’ he explained.

‘The number of young scientists who have been lost to the industry or lost offshore, it is a national disgrace that they are not being better looked after,’ he added.

Seeking change: 'One of the key pillars of my broadcasting in this show will be rattling cages and helping our great scientific brains and researchers get a better slice of the funding pie,' he explained (Jim's sister Footy Show panellist Rebecca Wilson, who died in 2016 of breast cancer is pictured)

Jim will replace Ben Fordham, who succeeded broadcast king Alan Jones in the breakfast slot earlier in June, following his retirement.

Jim tragically lost his youngest son Sam in 2010, after an eight-month battle with brain cancer.

Jim also shares an older son, Joseph, with his former wife Jackie, who he split from in 2008.

Finding love: Despite the tragedies, Jim has found happiness with former Channel Seven colleague Chris Bath, who he started dating in December 2008. The pair married in a small private ceremony in the Hunter Valley in January 2012, after dating for three years (both pictured)

Tragedy would strike the broadcasters family again when he lost his older sister Rebecca to breast cancer in October 2016.

Rebecca, who was 54 at the time of her death, was also a popular sports commentator and Footy Show panellist.

‘She was fearless and we’re very, very proud of her,’ Jim said of his sister, in an interview with 2GB at the time of her death.

Despite being shrouded in tragedy, Jim has also found happiness after finding love with former Channel Seven colleague Chris Bath, who he started dating in December 2008.

Jim will be replaced by former Olympic Matt Shirvington who will start his role with Channel Seven as a sports reporter next week.
