Coleen Nolan breaks down in tears on Loose Women after sisters Anne and Linda’s cancer diagnoses

‘Cancer has devastated my family’: Coleen Nolan breaks down in tears on Loose Women over sisters Anne and Linda’s diagnoses and says her breasts ‘feel like timebombs’

Coleen Nolan made an emotional return to Loose Women on Monday, where she spoke about her sisters Anne and Linda’s cancer diagnoses.

The TV presenter, 55, was left devastated after Anne, 69, was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer while Linda, 61, discovered she has incurable liver cancer just days later.

Coleen told her Loose Women co-stars that ‘cancer has devastated my family,’ and admitted she is considering having a mastectomy.

Emotional: Coleen Nolan made an emotional return to Loose Women on Monday, where she spoke about her sisters Anne and Linda’s cancer diagnoses

Coleen has been absent from the daytime chat show since the heartbreaking news broke, but made her return to the panel on Monday, appearing via videolink from her home.

Andrea McLean asked how the star is doing, with Coleen admitting: ‘It’s hard, isn’t it? It’s really hard. The news of Anne and Linda came after such an incredible time with The Nolans go Cruising and then two weeks later, this devasting news hit us.’

‘My sisters, they’re obviously devastated, but they’ve battled it. They’re nearly at the end of their chemo. It’s difficult for me to sit at home and cry for myself when I see them being so stoic and laughing.’

Anne has moved in with her sister Maureen while Linda is with sister Denise, but Coleen explained how hard it is not to be able to visit her loved ones.

‘Obviously they have days where they are incredibly ill and Maureen and Denise give us the info on those days. It’s really hard because I can’t go and see them, they’re high risk.’

‘The rest of the family can look in through the window but my initial reaction was to jump in the car and go to Blackpool and wrap my arms around them and I can’t, it’s heartbreaking.’

Speaking about her personal reaction to the news, Coleen said it ‘makes you question your own mortality. Cancer has devastated my family and has for lots of families.’

Coleen’s sister Bernie died from cancer in 2013, and Coleen said doctors are now looking more closely if there is a genetic link in the family.

She also explained that she wants to look into her options for a mastectomy, with the support of her children.

‘My kneejerk reaction when I heard the news was, I need to get these off me, they’re like time bombs, I don’t want them. It is something I’m seriously considering and it is something I am going to get all the professional, medical advice I can get,’ Coleen said.

‘If they say, you do need it done or it would be better if you had it done, I will sit down with my children and talk about it. I’m at a fantastic stage in my life, I’ve just got divorced and I’m really happy and I’m not going to let cancer change that.’

Hard: Coleen explained that her sister Linda has been upset about her hair loss. 'She thinks people think she’s being vain but it’s been hard for her' she explained

Speaking about her children’s reaction, Coleen insisted: ‘I thought they’d go, absolutely not, it’s major surgery. I thought they’d be scared but actually they were the opposite. They were like, mum, you don’t need them. If it gives you a higher chance of survival, go for it.’

‘The geneticist said it could be a rogue gene from my father’s side. He says he doesn’t believe it’s just bad luck that three sisters out of six have caught it. He thinks maybe there’s a genetic link somewhere that they haven’t caught yet.’

Coleen broke down after her co-stars after how Linda and Anne are, tearfully replying:  ‘They’re suffering terribly now with anxiety, something Anne has never had in her life. Linda is devastated about the hairloss. She thinks people think she’s being vain but it’s been hard for her. I can’t believe I’m crying.’

When the show returned Coleen told her co-presenters: ‘When you start talking about it, it makes it so real. I just had a moment. When you start talking about it, it makes it real and I haven’t really spoken about it, not even to you. But I’m OK.’

Anne found out she has stage three breast cancer shortly after the pair returned from filming a series of The Nolans Go Cruising with sisters Coleen and Maureen in March.

She discovered the lump leading to her diagnosis in April, exactly 20 years after she was first found to have the disease in 2000.

Her sister Linda found out she has incurable liver cancer days later.

The pop star has also battled cancer before, after being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006, cellulitis and lymphoedema in her arm in 2007 and secondary cancer on her pelvis in 2017.
