With Manchester United’s pursuit of Jadon Sancho in balance, who could Solskjaer turn to instead?

With Manchester United’s pursuit of Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho in the balance – over his £108m valuation – who else could Ole Gunnar Solskjaer turn to in order to bolster his attacking options for next season?

Monday was a key day in the development of Jadon Sancho‘s future, amid links with a move to Manchester United this summer.

Dortmund chief Michael Zorc insisted United have no chance of signing Sancho now after he jetted off with his team-mates to Switzerland for a pre-season training camp. However, the Red Devils still remain hopeful of landing the England international with the two clubs remaining at loggerheads over his £108million valuation.

Dortmund’s valuation of the England winger continues to be a stumbling block along with the players’ wages and his agent’s fees. United are determined not to repeat the mistakes of the past few years which has seen them make some costly mistakes in the transfer market.

Speaking on Monday, Zorc said: ‘We plan with Jadon Sancho. He’ll play for us next season. The decision is final. I think that answers all of the questions.’

Zorc also went on to reveal that the club secretly renewed Sancho’s contract until 2023 a year ago and as such, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his staff could start to look elsewhere as they hunt an attacking talent to add to their ranks.

Though Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood have all proved themselves capable of operating from out-wide, all three favour a role through the middle.

So, if the Sancho deal does indeed fall through, who are United’s alternatives in an attacking position on the flanks? Sportsmail takes you through all the potential options…

    KINGSLEY COMAN

The Bayern Munich forward, who is on a streak of nine-straight league titles across three different teams, has already racked up quite the array of top European clubs in his career, despite only just reaching his peak years at 24.

The former PSG and Juventus winger – who missed the Champions League last-16 second leg victory over Chelsea on Saturday with a muscle problem – is not always an automatic starter at the Allianz Arena, and this season has fought for a place against the likes of Serge Gnabry, Ivan Perisic, Thomas Muller and Philippe Coutinho.

With Leroy Sane signing too, the attraction of regular first-team football could be key for Coman, with the Frenchman’s direct style of play, as well as skill and prowess in one-on-one situations out-wide, proving attractive to Solskjaer.

With experience in Ligue 1, Serie A and the Bundesliga already, Coman certainly wouldn’t be fazed by a move to Old Trafford, which could materialise via a loan deal with an option to buy.

    DOUGLAS COSTA

Formerly of Bayern himself, Juventus winger Douglas Costa presents an all-together different threat from out-wide – but by no means any less effective.

The left-footed Brazilian is believed to be preparing himself for a move away this summer, after starting just six league games all season as the Old Lady retained their Serie A title under the now-sacked Maurizio Sarri.

It remains to be seen whether Costa features in new boss Andrea Pirlo’s plans, but the 29-year-old has failed to hit the ground running since making the move to Turin three years ago.

After making the move to Juve permanent in 2018, the Brazilian has scored just two Serie A goals and registered six assists since then.

He fared slightly better in Germany, scoring 14 goals in 77 matches for Bayern, after completing a £22m from Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk.

    ADAMA TRAORE

The powerhouse, who is still in action for Wolves this season in the Europa League, has come on leaps and bounds this season and has undoubtedly been one of the Premier League’s surprise packages.

Valued at £90m by the Midlands club, Traore has added an end product to his game this season, scoring six goals including a match-winning double against Manchester City last October, and registering 12 assists in all competitions.

Formerly of Barcelona, Middlesbrough and Aston Villa, Traore has thrived in a Wolves side which continues to surpass expectations, and the 24-year-old is an integral part of the side’s attack.

Also linked with Premier League champions Liverpool, and with Wolves needing to win the Europa League to play in the Champions League football next season, there may well be a number of suitors for Traore this summer, particularly if he has his sights set on a move to a big European club such as United.

    LEON BAILEY

The Bayer Leverkusen winger is the obvious cheaper alternative to Sancho this summer, with the Jamaican also impressing in the Bundesliga this season.

Playing in an attack alongside Chelsea’s £90m target Kai Havertz, Bailey has scored seven goals in all competitions and has previously spoken of his desire to play in the Premier League.

‘Fundamentally, my dream has always been, and still is, to play in England,’ he told German outlet Bild last year. ‘If I continue to work hard, I am sure that it will work out.’

A forward blessed with explosive pace and excellent dead-ball skills, Bailey has established himself alongside Havertz and Julian Brandt as one of a handful of young superstars plying their trade at Leverkusen.

United have been linked with a £40m bid for Bailey already this summer – a considerably cheaper plunge in the ocean than the cash required to bring Sancho in.

    DWIGHT MCNEIL

The Burnley winger has a different game-style to Sancho, but looks a brilliant talent who has proven himself at just 20-years-old in the English top-flight.

McNeil, who was released from United when he was 14-years-old, started every single match for the Clarets in 2019-20, and is the youngest player to reach 10 Premier League assists overall since Raheem Sterling.

A left-footed dribbler who enjoys hugging the left-hand touchline, his directness and crossing ability has caught the eye of a number of clubs, and United have been linked with a move for the Englishman.

Though perhaps more an investment for the future, Burnley boss Sean Dyche has admitted he’d be surprised if McNeil stayed at Turf Moor long-term, and United are currently at the front of the queue.
