Katy Perry says she’s not afraid of the ‘pain’ of giving birth… as pal Sia reveals the diva had ‘a real breakdown’ during her 2017 depression
Katy Perry is ready to prove her strength as she prepares for her first child and the release of her new album Smile.
The pop diva, 35, said she has no fears about the future, declaring she was ‘born into chaos’ in an in-depth interview with the Los Angeles Times published Wednesday.
‘The pain will pass. It’s temporary,’ Perry said about the impending birth of her baby girl with fiance Orlando Bloom.

And she’s applied that same philosophy to life since finding herself in a deep bout of clinical depression after the lackluster release of her album Witness in 2017, something she fought hard to overcome.
‘Five years ago, I would be like, “Get this out of me,”‘ she said about her pregnancy. ‘But I traced back the reasons I felt insecure about it from my own upbringing. And then I reprogrammed them. Our brain is really malleable. You can reshape it any time you want.’
Katy said initially she was able to subdue her insecurities through her whirlwind career after having rocketed to stardom in 2008 with the release of her first number one hit, I Kissed A Girl.
It wasn’t until Witness almost 10 years later that she got a wake-up call.
‘The foundation started shaking and a couple of the screws started coming off,’ she said. Then she was forced to confront ‘what kept knocking.’
‘I think the universe was like, “OK, all right, let’s have some humble pie here,” Perry said.
‘My negative thoughts were not great. They didn’t want to plan for a future. I also felt like I could control it by saying, “I’ll have the last word if I hurt myself or do something stupid and I’ll show you” — but really, who was I showing?’
Putting on a brave face: The Smile songstress also opened up about her battle with clinical depression
Bumping along nicely: ‘Five years ago, I would be like, “Get this out of me,”‘ she said about her pregnancy. ‘But I traced back the reasons I felt insecure about it from my own upbringing. And then I reprogrammed them. Our brain is really malleable. You can reshape it any time you want’
Witness wasn’t the only thing weighing on Katy in 2017. At the time she had split with now-fiance Orlando, explaining she ‘wasn’t ready for the growth’ their relationship needed.
It was around this time she a found fellow singer Sia, who became a close friend and confidant.
The Chandelier singer – who has been open about her mental health struggles – recalled how serious things got after Katy showed up at her house ‘in a bad way.’
‘She had a real breakdown,’ Sia said. ‘She’s on stage with 10 candied lollipops and clowns and dancers, selling the dream, the joy, the happiness — and that’s really hard sometimes when you’re not feeling it yourself.’
‘I knew she was driven and ambitious, that was clear from the beginning. But I didn’t realize that she was so reliant on that validation for her psychological well-being. She did say “I feel lost.”
‘I think it was a big kick to her ego, but it was the best thing that could have ever happened to her, really, because now she can make music for the fun of it. Getting number ones does nothing for your inside.’
Overwhelmed: Katy’s depression came amid an album flop and split from Orlando Bloom. ‘I think the universe was like, “OK, all right, let’s have some humble pie here,” she said
Low point: Sia told the Times about Katy’s mental state at the time, revealing the pop star had a ‘real breakdown.’ The duo are seen in 2016 above
At the same time Sia said she was reaching out to Orlando to talk about his relationship with Katy.
‘I’d be on the phone with Orlando and have call waiting with Katy trying to call me,’ the Elastic Heart singer admitted.
When they reunited in 2018, Perry was a new woman.
Now the pair are ready to embark on a new journey as parents together.
The expecting star told the Times she was still ‘cooking’ but that she noticed she’s near the finish line. She’s prepared her hospital bag, after realizing she’s been slowing down.
Katy said she’s excited to raise her little girl ‘differently than the way I was raised,’ hoping to foster her little one’s creativity and give her ‘choice and freedom of thought.’
Katy and Orlando are expecting any day now. The star looked just days away from the arrival while spotted out house hunting in Montecito, California on Tuesday.
While this will be Perry’s first child, Bloom is already a father. He shares nine-year-old son Flynn with ex Miranda Kerr.
