Food bank for VEGANS opens in Bath but is open to meat-eaters

Food bank for VEGANS opens up to help out struggling Britons who prefer a plant-based diet

    • The food bank is based in Bath, Somerset and helps around 16 families a week
    • Helen Wright, who set up the food bank, said you don’t have to be vegan to use it
    • They give out food parcels with beans, lentils, fresh fruit and dairy-free milk

A vegan-only food bank has opened to help out plant-based eaters going without food.

The food bank – one of the first of its kind in the UK – is based in Bath, Somerset, and has even received National Lottery funding to assist it.

It will only accept donations such as lentils, couscous and dairy-free milk but will provide care packages to non-vegans who are in trouble.

The Bath Vegan Food Bank in Bath, Somerset, doesn’t provide non-vegan products, but you don’t have to be a vegan to use the food bank

The charitable enterprise was set up by vegan Helen Wright, to help people struggling during the coronavirus pandemic.

She had heard about vegans struggling to get plant-based products from normal food banks.

It currently helps 16 families a week, giving out food parcels with beans, lentils, fresh fruit and vegetables, dairy-free milk, and a treat.

A fundraiser has been set up to help increase the number of food packages available and has raised £520 of its £1,000 goal.

Helen, who has been a vegan for eight years, said: ‘The food bank was set up because of the coronavirus pandemic. I wanted to do something to help.’

‘There’s no other vegan food bank in the area’.

She added: ‘One person I spoke to went to another food bank and would take out anything that wasn’t vegan from their food parcel, but it wasn’t always replaced.’

She said: ‘Being vegans, we don’t provide non-vegan products but you don’t have to be a vegan to use the food bank.

‘We’re open to anyone who declares they are financially suffering.

‘As long as we can afford it and have the food available we will support people for as long as they need it.’

The fundraiser says: ‘The Covid-19 crisis has seen the use of food banks rise to unprecedented levels.

‘Bath Vegan Food Bank is a Vegans Against World Hunger project which has been set up to help people in Bath who are struggling to put food on the table and buy other essential items.

‘We deliver vegan food and toiletries parcels directly to clients’ homes, currently on a contact-free basis.’
