A man who gave another driver whiplash after he ploughed into the back of her car while travelling up to 90km/h has revealed why it’s never safe to drink while driving.
The driver had been travelling along the Gungahlin Drive Extension in Canberra this week when he dropped his drink bottle after taking a sip.
Without realising the traffic ahead had come to a stop, the driver tried to pick up the bottle before smashing straight into the back of a stationary blue hatchback.
Shards of glass were seen flying into the air while the female driver got out of her car before falling to the ground to sit down.
The alarming footage was shared to Dash Cam Owners Australia but many were furious with how ‘reckless’ the driver had been.
‘On the GDE in Canberra, taking a drink from my bottle when I dropped it trying to put it back in the door pocket,’ the driver said.
‘Didn’t see that traffic had stopped on the other side of the crest and didn’t have time to stop by the time I noticed.
‘Woman in the car I hit got a bit of whiplash but there was nothing serious.’
A driver had been fumbling with his drink bottle before slamming into a stationary blue hatchback in front of him on the Gungahlin Drive Extension in Canberra
The driver was travelling at around 83km/h when he smashed into the car in front giving the motorist whiplash
The footage received more than 2,000 comments but many viewers questioned how the woman only had ‘whiplash’ after suffering such a blow.
‘How you didn’t kill someone with your incompetence escapes me,’ one commented.
‘Did anyone else hear anything like a bottle being fumbled? Had anyone been in the back of that car they absolutely would have died. You hit them at 80km/h.
‘There is no way she ‘only’ got whiplash from that impact. So f***ing reckless. Don’t EVER drive again,’ another said.
‘Hand in your licence sir you shouldn’t have one. If there had been kids in the back of that car you could of killed them, all for a drink bottle,’ someone said.
‘Can’t hear no drink bottle top popping open or closed. Can’t hear you fumbling to put the drink bottle back into the door pocket.. I call bulls**t. I feel extremely sorry for the lady you hit. I hope she recovers fully from her SERIOUS whiplash,’ another commented.
‘Lady’s fine and just a bit of whiplash? Mate I bet this poor lady is scarred for life. I had a similar incident in a Corolla and not only did I get whiplash, I got shock and trauma,’ one user wrote.
Daily Mail Australia has contacted ACT Police for comment.
