Leicester finally wrap up £36m signing of Wesley Fofana from St Etienne

Leicester wrap up £36m signing of Wesley Fofana from St Etienne as 19-year-old defender pens a five-year contract with the Foxes

    • Wesley Fofana has completed his £36m to Leicester from St Etienne
    • The 19-year-old was confirmed as a Foxes player after signing a five-year deal
    • Fofana’s move ends Leicester’s interest in Burnley defender James Tarkowski

Leicester have completed the signing of Wesley Fofana from St Etienne on a five-year deal.

The 19-year-old defender joins for an initial £32million – which could rise to £36m with add-ons – ahead of Monday’s transfer deadline.

It ends the Foxes’ interest in James Tarkowski after they had a bid worth over £30million rejected for the Burnley centre-back last month.

Fofana has been Leicester’s prime target throughout the summer and they finally landed their man on Friday as he posed for pictures at his new club.

After completing his move, the defender said: ‘I’m very happy to be here. I’ve watched Leicester City closely since they won the title and they’re a top club in the Premier League.

‘I know I will learn a lot from the players and the manager here, which is one of the main reasons I came. I can’t wait to get started.’

St Etienne had been reluctant to part ways with the highly-rated 19-year-old but confirmed earlier this week he would be sold to Leicester after they received the largest transfer fee in their history.

The French side, coached by former Leicester boss Claude Puel, have now asked agents to find a suitable replacement as they consider agreeing to let 6ft 3ins Fofana leave. They have already discussed Bafode Diakite at Toulouse.

Tarkowski has returned to training at Burnley with the Turf Moor club believing their asking price won’t be met for the 27-year-old.

Leicester, meanwhile, are in talks with Lyon over the sale of forward Islam Slimani.

The Algerian has 12 months left on contract and Lyon are trying to sign him for free.
