A portion of George Washington’s historic Mount Vernon estate is now available for purchase for a cool $60million, providing fans of the Founding Father an opportunity to get their hands on prime Virginia real estate.

Located on the banks of the Potomac River, the 16.5acre property has become the most expensive home ever to list in the Alexandria region of Virginia’s Fairfax County, near Washington DC, according to the Wall Street Journal.

A former plantation, Mount Vernon served as a longtime home of the first US President and his wife Martha. The home is now a National Historic Landmark.

The first First Family of the United States expanded the property to include numerous farms and gardens in the 1800s. The listed property stayed in the Washington family until 1859, and has since changed hands four times.

There is also a three-bedroom guesthouse on the estate, in addition to a carriage house that’s been transformed into a studio apartment.

The gardens have also recently been re-landscaped to include traditional English boxwood hedges and pergolas to match old blueprints the owners found of the property, listing agent Heather Corey, of TTR Sotheby’s International Realty, told the Wall Street Journal.

According to Corey, the owners completely demolished a home on the property when they first bought it, and spent nearly five years – and tens of millions of dollars – designing and constructing a new home and renovating its surroundings.

The couple moved into the home in 2018, but registered the home for sale on Thursday.

Corey declined to comment to WSJ as to why the couple have decided to sell the estate, however the couple said they’re passionate about renovation projects and were originally interested in buying the property because they’re ‘history buffs’.

Robert Stevens serve as chief executive of Lockheed Martin from August 2004 until December 2012, the company’s website states.

He previously served on President George W. Bush’s Commission to Examine the Future of the United States Aerospace Industry, and was appointed by President Barack Obama to the Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiations in 2012.
