Ana de Armas reveals she nearly passed on her starring role in the 2019 murder mystery Knives Out

‘Things could have been very different’: Ana de Armas on why she nearly passed on starring role in the 2019 murder mystery Knives Out

Ana de Armas almost turned down her starring role in 2019’s Oscar-nominated whodunit, Knives Out, after reading a three-word description of her character.

While the 32-year-old actress’ striking portrayal of Marta Cabrera landed her a Golden Globe nomination, she had initial hesitations about being stereotyped.

‘Things could have been very different,’ teased the girlfriend of Ben Affleck, who also scored a leading part in the upcoming James Bond movie, No Time To Die.

Confession: Ana de Armas almost turned down her starring role in 2019’s Oscar-nominated whodunit, Knives Out, after reading a three-word description of her character

In an interview with Flaunt on Thursday, she explained: ‘I really pay attention to what that little description is. I’m sure whoever did it wasn’t thinking about what that meant but for me, I was just like, “Oh no, I’m not doing this!” What do you mean—caretaker, Latina, pretty?’

After being previously typecast in stereotypical Latina parts through her teens, de Armas assumed the role would simply require her to be ‘pretty’ and ‘fiery.’

‘I’m very proud of being Cuban and being Latina and I will play the most Latina any Latina has ever played Latina,’ she told the outlet. ‘But it also doesn’t interest me that much, all the time. It gets very boring, very quickly and I want to do other things.’

She stressed: ‘I want to think and believe that I can play anybody, anywhere in the world because the stories I want to tell are universal. I want to be able to tell any story.’

Her role in the box office triumph, however, which placed her alongside Daniel Craig, was much more dynamic and nuanced.

In December, the beauty first spoke of the lackluster character description, which she later realized ‘didn’t fit’ with the script.

‘Getting an email that described the character like that — without any more information or a script attached because it was high-profile and secret — just really didn’t speak to me,’ she admitted to THR

The leading lady added: ‘So, because of the character description, my imagination immediately went to a portrayal that was not necessarily very positive or exciting in relation to Latin culture.’

In her latest photo shoot for Flaunt, Ana also opened up about the challenges of being in lockdown in Los Angeles away from her family in Cuba and navigating her newfound fame.

Being away from her family while on lockdown has been difficult. ‘I miss my family so much,’ said the star, whose relatives are in Cuba.

‘It’s a different experience for me to be in LA,’ she noted. The actress is often photographed walking her dog or being next to her Dark Water costar Affleck whom she has been dating since the end of 2019.

The two have not been photographed together in months, as he has been in Ireland making The Last Duel with Matt Damon.

During the candid interview, Ana also confessed she didn’t consider the spotlight before beginning her acting career.

‘It is just a consequence of my job,’ she remarked.

The fame she has experienced so far has helped her relate to Marilyn Monroe, who she will be portraying in Blonde.
