Makeup artist, 30, shares her tricks for mastering the perfect beauty look

Apply eye primer to your nose, use setting powder under foundation and hide a blemish with dark concealer: Makeup artist, 30, shares her tricks for mastering the perfect beauty look

    • Australian makeup artist Nikkia Joy, 30, has shared her top beauty tricks and tips
    • The owner of Nikkia Joy Cosmetics runs a very successful YouTube channel
    • She allows her skincare to sit for 10 to 15 minutes before applying her makeup
    • She also uses primer on her nose area to stop the foundation from ‘cracking’
    • Using a translucent powder under foundation will also help it ‘set’ better

An Australian makeup artist has shared her foolproof tricks for creating a flawless base using products you already have at home and explained how to conceal a blemish with a darker shade of concealer.

Nikkia Joy, who has almost one million followers on YouTube and is the owner of Nikkia Joy Cosmetics, has spelled out some of her unique rules for makeup wearing – and revealed just how she keeps the products from fading on her face.

She starts by letting her skincare sit on her skin for 10 to 15 minutes before even thinking about picking up a foundation sponge.

‘Most of us apply it straight after but your skin actually needs time to absorb it and allowing it to absorb properly will mean your makeup will apply smoother, and last longer during the day,’ the 30-year-old from Melbourne told FEMAIL.

Next she’ll apply her primer, specifically taking an eye primer to her nose to prevent makeup rubbing off or transferring.

‘You only need a tiny amount. Apply it to your nose and any other areas that your makeup tends to rub off of during the day,’ she said.

Nikkia uses a translucent setting powder under her foundation to keep her cream base from ‘cracking’ during the day.

After applying your primer, use a damp sponge to apply a small amount of translucent powder all over your face before going in with the foundation.

‘It will help your makeup look smoother, stay shine free, hold up better against sweat and last all day,’ she said.

Using a damp sponge gives your skin an ‘airbrushed’ effect that brushes just can’t achieve, hiding any texture or pigmentation you might have.

Those wanting to dull down their full coverage foundation during the summer months should also take heed of Nikkia’s moisturiser trick.

‘Try mixing a couple of drops of foundation into your daily moisturiser on the back of your hand. It will transform the foundation into a more natural and sheer coverage formula,’ she said.

To hide any nasty blemishes look to applying a concealer in a slightly darker shade than your foundation colour, rather than a lighter shade – which is the common tactic.

The darker pigments will counteract the redness of the blemish and will hide it much better than a lighter concealer would.

    Nikkia Joy’s top makeup tricks:

    1. Let your skincare sit on the skin for 10-15 minutes before applying your makeup.

    2. Apply eye primer to your nose to prevent your makeup rubbing off/transferring off your nose during the day.

    3. Use a translucent setting powder under foundation to help your makeup last longer.

    4. If you have trouble getting your lipstick to last all day try applying a lip liner under the lipstick first.

    5. If you have a favourite foundation that is more on the full coverage side and you’re wanting to achieve more of a natural look for everyday wear, try mixing a couple of drops into your daily moisturiser on the back of your hand.

    6. Got a nasty blemish that you’re wanting to cover? Try applying a concealer in a slightly darker shade than your foundation colour.

    7. Your favourite lipstick can be used for so much more than just on your lips. If you’re in a rush and need a pulled together look, you can apply some of your lipstick to the crease of your eyes with a fluffy blending blush and also dab it onto your cheeks.

    8. Apply your foundation with a damp sponge to give a much smoother, and more flawless result than a brush.

    9. Use sticky tape to apply your winged linger perfectly.

    10. If you’re new to false eyelashes and find them a little daunting, you can chop them into multiple pieces and apply them piece by piece.

‘If you have trouble getting your lipstick to last all day try applying a lip liner under the lipstick first,’ Nikkia said.

‘Trace the lips with your chosen shade, then fill them in before applying lipstick over the top. It will hold your lip colour in place much longer and prevent your lipstick bleeding.’

Your favourite lipstick can be used for so much more than just highlighting your pout.

If you’re in a rush and need a pulled together look quickly, you can apply some of your lipstick to the crease of your eyes with a fluffy blending blush and also dab it onto your cheeks.

‘Using similar shades on your eyes, cheeks and lips is an old makeup artist trick that makes it look like you spent hours doing your makeup,’ she said.

If you’re having trouble mastering the winged eyeliner look there’s also a super easy hack to get it perfect every time.

Take a piece of sticky tape and press it on the back of your hand a few times to take away some of the tackiness and then imagine a straight line between the outer corner of your eye and the tip of your brow.

Apply the tape along this line and use it to draw your eyeliner up against.

Once you have finished, simply remove the tape and you will have a perfectly clean wing.

‘If you’re new to false eyelashes and find them a little daunting to work with, you can chop them into multiple pieces (usually two or three pieces works best) and apply them piece by piece,’ Nikkia suggested.

‘This also gives you more flexibility to customise and layer the look or just use one piece at the outer corner of your eyes as an accent lash.’
