AJ McLean says he has shed ‘almost a pound a week’ since joining DWTS: I’ve ‘lost probably seven or eight pounds’
AJ McLean opened up about his incredible body transformation, after performing to his ’90s hit, Larger Than Life, on Monday night’s episode of Dancing With The Stars.
The Backstreet Boys alum, 42, who is partnered up with pro Cheryl Burke on ABC’s long-running competition series, revealed to Us Weekly he’s recently ‘lost probably seven or eight pounds.’
‘It’s almost a pound a week,’ he said, since starting training for the show, just seven weeks ago.

Burke, 36, interjected: ‘I keep telling him he needs to eat,’ while McLean pointed out he is, ‘eating, but it’s almost like I’m fasting.’
Despite always making the time to eat in the morning, a ‘bit of lunch’ and never skipping dinner, he says the weight loss has continued.
‘I don’t think people understand though how many calories [you burn],’ Burke told the outlet. ‘It’s not just you running on a treadmill [while training], so you end up burning way more calories than if you were just running on a treadmill or at the gym.’

Earlier this year, the star also opened up about losing even more weight to his nearly one million Instagram followers.
‘Decided to finally take my health seriously and get in the best shape of my life during quarantine time,’ he captioned a series of four shirtless before and after shots.
He continued: ‘Top left is from day one of quarantine and the bottom right is from yesterday. Happy Saturday everyone and stay safe and healthy!’

The Florida native, who has shed at least 20 pounds since March, says his ‘transformation is unrecognizable’ and he ‘couldn’t be happier.’
Additionally, he spoke of his sober lifestyle, which bonded him with Burke, who recently celebrated two years of sobriety.
Late last month on an episode of the LadyGang podcast (via US Weekly), the professional dancer talked about her sobriety brought her closer to McLean.

LadyGang podcast host Keltie Knight was speaking about her sobriety on the podcast, which lead Burke to open up as well.
‘That’s why I really wanted AJ, because I’m like, for him to be maybe partnered with someone who is just, like, still fresh in the scene [or] likes to go out, I was a little worried just as a friend in a way,’ Burke said.
‘But then I’m glad we’re partnered up together,’ she added of her pal, who had struggled with drug and alcohol issues for many years before making the decision to become sober.

During the interview, she Burke revealed that she has not gone through the Alcoholics Anonymous program, adding it was ‘just a decision that I made for myself.
The dancer got engaged to Matthew Lawrence in May 2018, with the dancer revealing that she made the decision to go sober at her engagement party.
‘And it was when Matt and I got engaged and it was during that engagement party that we were just like — or that I was like, he didn’t even know — I was just like, I was done,’ she added.

The dancer also revealed that her own father, who passed away in 2018, was an alcoholic, and his history with substance abuse also factored into her getting sober.
‘My father passed away, and then my dad was an alcoholic, so either I was gonna crash and burn and check myself into rehab or I was gonna just quit cold turkey,’ Burke said, adding, ‘That’s just my personality. It’s either black or white.’
Burke and McLean have also launched their Pretty Messed Up podcast since teaming up on the show, which Burke said has been going ‘great.’
