EastEnders star John Altman says he was ‘NOT pleased’ over onscreen daughter Dotty’s recasting

‘I’ve no idea on God’s earth why they recast it’: EastEnders star John Altman says he and June Brown were NOT ‘pleased’ over onscreen daughter Dotty’s recasting

EastEnders star Nick Altman has revealed that he and June Brown were not pleased when his onscreen daughter Dotty was recast.

The actor, 68, who played ‘Nasty’ Nick Cotton on and off between 1985 and 2015, stated he has ‘no idea on God’s earth’ why soap bosses decided to recast original actress Molly Conlin.

Molly, now 19, played John’s daughter on the soap in 2008, remaining in the role for two years. The character returned in 2019 and was recast with actress Milly Zero, 21.

Despite no longer appearing in the BBC soap, John opened up about Molly being replaced and suggested he and June, 93, who played his onscreen mum Dot Cotton, were not impressed with the decision.

He told Entertainment Daily: ‘She wasn’t pleased with the recasting of Dotty but that wasn’t the reason she left. I wish people would get it right sometimes. It’s highly irritating.

‘She wasn’t pleased and nor was I because the former actress, Molly Conlin, was quite capable of playing that part. She’s a lovely looking girl as well.

‘I’ve no idea on God’s earth why they recast it. I’ve no idea what goes on in their brains up there sometimes. She’s done very well the new actress [Milly Zero], but why do it? It’s recast mania up there. So many actors have changed and they never look the same.’

Last year, ex-star Molly revealed she was ‘very upset’ to learn her character Dotty Cotton had been recast.

The actress told The Sun she was approached by bosses to reprise her role, but was disappointed to learn they decided someone older should play the role.

Changes: Molly, now 19,  played John's daughter on the soap in 2008, remaining in the role for two years.

Molly told the publication: ‘They did approach me, unfortunately they wanted the new Dotty to go back and appear a lot older and be played by someone in their 20s.

‘Of course I would have loved to have returned to EastEnders, but I believe everything happens for a reason.’

The actress later took to Instagram Stories to address the speculation, and wrote: ‘Everyone’s asking so many questions so I thought I’d write a post, yes they have re-cast Dotty Cotton, they wanted the new Dotty to appear a lot older and for her to be roughly in her 20s!

A representative for EastEnders declined to comment when contacted by MailOnline.

Dotty first arrived in Albert Square in 2008 as Nick Cotton’s daughter, but the sweet schoolgirl proved to be an unlikely villain to the surprise of viewers.

She played pranks on her grandmother and her husband Jim, who at the time was still recovering from a stroke, and plotted to kill Dot with her dad Nick to cash in on the money left to them in her will.

After being smacked by her grandmother when she pushed her too far, Dotty phoned the police resulting in the beloved soap character being arrested for assault.

When Nick fled the Square, Dotty was eventually reunited with her mum Sandy, and eventually patched things up with her grandmother as she left Walford in 2010, with Dot going to visit the family off-screen on numerous occasions.

Truth: The budding actress also took to Instagram to post a snap of Milly Zero, who had been cast as Dotty ahead of the character's to Walford later that year
