Belfast bar proudly shares two-star review branding it a ‘medical exam’ experience

Belfast bar hits back at customer who left a two-star TripAdvisor review complaining their personal space was invaded with a temperature gun and staff ‘had a fit’ because they weren’t wearing a mask

    • Belfast’s Voodoo proudly shared review branding it a ‘medical exam’ experience
    • Customer complained about ‘track and trace, temperature guns and face masks’
    • Said preferred to go to an establishment without those safety measures in place

A Belfast bar has proudly shared a scathing review which labelled it a ‘medical exam’ experience after the customer complained about ‘track and trace, temperature guns being used and having to wear a mask’.

Voodoo, based in the city centre, revealed the negative response on its Facebook page, joking: ‘A two star rating with a five star review.’

Writing on TripAdvisor this month, the person, whose username is Okim, said they preferred to go to an establishment without the safety measures in place.

‘Waiter almost had a fit as we had no mask on and told us to move back to the door… Next, before asking, he went at me with the temperature gun, invading my personal space and privacy,’ the customer bemoaned, but social media users were quick to praise the bar for their requirements.

The full review by Okim reads: ‘Shame. We were looking forward to a pint in here once it opened again. Unfortunately on entering it was like we had to conduct a medical exam first.

‘Waiter almost had a fit as we had no mask on and told us to move back to the door. We told him we were exempt, which he said was OK.

‘Next, before asking, he went at me with the temperature gun, invading my personal space and privacy!

‘I recoiled. No thank you. We told him we’d go elsewhere, before his track and trace clipboard came out. Way over the top. Not a pleasant experience.

‘I understand that government guidelines are in place for establishments, but this is not law. We went to another bar, no mention of wearing a mask, no guns, no track and trace!’

Taking to Facebook yesterday, one of the workers at Voodoo shared a picture of the review, saying: ‘Well now. When is a bad review actually a good review? Answer: In the middle of a pandemic.

‘At Voodoo we want to ensure all of our staff and customers are safe. We want to show governments and scientists that live music can come back again and it’s in safe hands.

‘Here’s a ringing endorsement of our procedures. Thanks, you guys! Pity about the dent in our trip advisor star rating, but we’ll not lose any sleep over that.’

Social media users were keen to praise the establishment for following government guidelines and enforcing coronavirus safety requirements.

‘This would make me feel safer and more comfortable/confident about visiting your bar’, one wrote, while another added: ‘A brilliant review, well done!’

A third said: ‘Get it framed! I was all business at the extra measures. Felt very safe and relaxed. Everyone! To trip advisor with those five stars!’

Speaking to Belfast Live, Voodoo’s general manager said: ‘Everybody’s entitled to their own opinion, but we saw that posted in a public forum and we thought it was right to have the chance to give our own say on it.’
