Dev Patel set to star in movie about exotic male dance troupe the Chippendales

Dev Patel set to star in movie about the Chippendales and the murderous saga surrounding the exotic male dancers

It’s a sordid tale of business, jealousy, and murder for hire and all revolving around male strippers.

The story of the Chippendales is being turned into a movie starring Dev Patel as Steve Banerjee, the Indian immigrant who created the exotic male dance troupe in Los Angeles in 1979.

Craig Gillespie, who helmed the acclaimed 2017 black comedy I, Tonya, is set to direct, Deadline.com reported Tuesday.

New role: The story of the Chippendales is being turned into a movie starring Dev Patel as Steve Banerjee, the Indian immigrant who created the exotic male dance troupe in 1979

It’s not yet know where the project will end up with several studios keen to get on board, according to Deadline.

Bombay-born Banerjee moved to Southern California where he purchased a struggling LA club and started offering female mud wrestling and male exotic dancers.

His ‘women only’ nights proved a huge hit and in 1979, the Chippendales were born.

His business partner Paul Snider was married to pinup model and actress Dorothy Stratten and she suggested the male dancers wear collars and cuffs.

Banerjee also teamed with producer Nick Denoia who recruited the male dancers, did the choreography and produced the touring live shows.

The venture started raking in millions of dollars a year with tours in the USA and Europe through the 1980s.

    However, tragedy also followed.

In 1980, Snider, 29, raped and murdered Stratton, 20, after she left him for director Peter Bogdanovich, and then killed himself.

In April, 1987, Denoia was shot and killed at his office in Manhattan.

With only Patel attached to the film, the search will now be on to cast the roles of Denoia, Snider and Stratten.

Patel is best known for the movie Slumdog Millionaire, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and its sequel, Lion and the HBO series The Newsroom.
