Elton John says it’s been ‘wonderful’ spending ‘every single day’ of lockdown with his family

‘I never get to spend much time with them!’ Elton John, 73, says it’s been ‘wonderful’ spending ‘every single day’ of lockdown with husband David Furnish and their two sons

Elton John said it’s been ‘wonderful’ spending ‘every single day’ of lockdown with his family on Tuesday’s episode of The One Show.

The Rocket Man hitmaker, 73, joined hosts Alex Jones and Michael Ball on the BBC chatshow in a special interview where he discussed his life, music and famous friendships over the years.

Talking about his family, Elton said it’s been ‘wonderful’ spending ‘every single day’ of lockdown with husband David Furnish and their two sons Zachary, nine, and Elijah, seven.

He sweetly shared: ‘The great thing about lockdown, and the silver lining, is that I’ve spent so much time with Zachary, Elijah and David.

‘I never get to spend much time with them anyway, so since March when we left Australia we’ve been in complete lockdown either in Los Angeles or in Britain and we’ve spent every single day together and it’s been wonderful.’

Elsewhere during the interview, Elton talked about his friendship with the late John Lennon.

The musician recalled how they became ‘really great friends’ in 1974 after they made a bet that John would join him on stage at Madison Square Garden, in NYC, because their song, Whatever Gets You Thru the Night, made number one in the charts.

Elton said: ‘John came on stage with us at Madison Square Garden in New York City on Thanksgiving 1974. I made a bet with him because I sang on his record Whatever Gets You Through The Night, and I played piano on it.

‘I said, ”Listen, if it gets to number one you’ve got to come on stage with us”, and it did get to number one so he did, and he hadn’t been on stage since the Peace concert in Toronto, and not in New York since the Beatles played Shea Stadium.’

Elton added that John was so nervous he ‘threw up before the show’ and he also re-met wife Yoko Ono.

John and Yoko married in 1969 but briefly split before they had Sean, now 45, in 1975.

Elton continued: ‘He was so nervous, he threw up before the show, and that’s where he re-met Yoko that night, she came to the show, gave him a gardenia.

‘When he came on stage I’ll never ever forget the reception he got, it was New York City, they love him…’

He added: ‘We became really great friends for a couple of years and he had Sean his second son and he just had a great life with him until, of course, the tragedy happened and he was assassinated.’

Elton’s interview comes after his husband David revealed that they have been camping in the woods surrounding of one of their lavish homes as a fun activity for their children during the coronavirus lockdown.

The family have been spending the majority of lockdown in their £6million Los Angeles mansion with the couple owning a total of six properties.

Talking to singer Lulu, 71, on an Instagram Live, the filmmaker, 57, explained that they have been doing a more ‘restricted’ version of self isolation due to Elton being 73-years-old.

During the chat, David admitted he was ‘conscious’ that their two sons Zachary, nine, and Elijah, seven, haven’t been able to see their friends so they’ve been doing lots of fun activities at home including their first camping experience in their garden.

It is not known which mansion David was referring to but it’s likely to be their Windsor home which has a sprawling garden complete with a large lake to feed ducks.

He said: ‘Because Elton is 73 we’ve been doing a more restricted version of lockdown so one thing the boys haven’t been able to do is get out and mix with their friends which I feel really conscious of so how many activities can we do with them at home?

‘I grew up in Canada, I was a cub scout, I was a boy scout, I love camping, and I am a camper.’

David revealed that he and Elton didn’t give their two sons a ‘glamping’ experience and instead took them to the woods in their garden where they had to build a fire pit, pitch a tent and gather wood.

He said: ‘I didn’t do glamping with the boys – that’s the posh camping where everything laid out beautifully for you.

‘We just went out into the woods here on our land and taught the boys how to clear a campsite, and dug and built a fire pit and pitched a tent and gathered wood for kindling.

‘Taught them how to start a fire, how to cook dinner in the fire, how to roast marshmallows and they hadn’t done any of that stuff before.

‘Just walking to the end of your own garden we were going away into a campsite.’

David said the ‘silver lining’ of lockdown has been spending so much time together as a family as Elton is currently off from his touring.

He sweetly said: ‘The silver lining in this cloud is that we’ve been together every single day, every meal and we’ve been doing so much together which isn’t normally the case because Elton is off on the road touring and doing shows.

‘To see and be with the boys as much as I ever have been has just been amazing. I’m watching them grow and change every day right before my eyes.’

Elton had to postpone his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour earlier this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

David and Elton own six properties in total located in California, Atlanta, London, Windsor, Nice and Venice.
