Depressing scenes in Melbourne as players mask up for AFL Brownlow Medal ‘virtual’ count

The Brownlow like you’ve NEVER seen before: Depressing scenes in Melbourne as players mask up for ‘virtual’ count – while WAGS steal the show at parties across five other cities

    • COVID-19 pandemic has meant AFL is not hosting a main ceremony this year
    • League instead holding variety of socially-distanced functions across Australia
    • Proceedings in Melbourne starkly contrasted events elsewhere in the country
    • Players temperature checked and wore face masks as is mandated in Melbourne
    • In Adelaide, players and their partners enjoyed canapes and drinks without mask
    • AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan also maskless addressing the Gold Coast function

Masked-up AFL players and their partners in Melbourne have had a very different experience of the league’s ‘virtual’ Brownlow Medal count than their counterparts elsewhere in Australia.

The COVID-19 pandemic has meant the AFL is not hosting a main ceremony to announce the best individual player in 2020.

The league’s star names have instead gathered at a variety of socially-distanced functions around the country – including Optus Stadium in Perth, Gold Coast’s Metricon Stadium and the Adelaide Oval.

At Melbourne’s designated venue, proceedings took on a more depressing tone as players wore face masks as are still mandated in public in the Victorian capital.

Darcy Parish of the Essendon Bombers and Jack Gunston of the Hawthorn Hawks were both pictured undertaking temperature checks, while face coverings were widespread inside the function room.

Face masks were nowhere to be seen in Adelaide as players like Jack Viney of the Demons enjoyed a canape.

The event in Perth also appeared to have a more upbeat tone as drinks flowed at the pre-count reception.

AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan also addressed the Gold Coast’s Metricon Stadium without a mask.

Despite the absence of a red carpet, the WAGS still grasped the chance to indulge in some glamour after months of few social opportunities due to lockdown.

The red-hot favourite to win in 2020 is Brisbane Lions star Lachie Neale, and he and his wife Julie Neale made a glamorous entrance.
