Coronavirus: UK faces second peak at CHRISTMAS, SAGE adviser warns

Britain faces a second Covid-19 peak at CHRISTMAS unless there is a full lockdown now: SAGE adviser’s stark warning as he says No10’s Three Tier strategy won’t work and will lead to thousands of deaths

Britain’s second wave of coronavirus could peak at Christmas if there is no national lockdown, a SAGE scientist warned today.

Professor John Edmunds, an epidemiologist at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, told MPs that the three-tier lockdown system will only slow down the UK’s outbreak and not shrink it.

The ultimate outcome, he said, can only be stabilised ‘high incidence everywhere’ because ‘nobody expects’ the policy to bring the reproduction rate (R) below one.

If the R stays at one or above the epidemic will never shrink and Professor Edmunds warned the policy would just lead to constant pressure on hospitals and regular deaths.

Clearly in favour of tougher restrictions for the whole country as soon as possible, Professor Edmunds said the Government is ‘not being as cautious as I would like’.
