X-Files star Gillian Anderson is seen with a baby bump as she films Sex Education

X-pecting again at 52? X-Files star Gillian Anderson is seen with a baby bump as she films third season of Netflix series Sex Education

As Dana Scully in The X-Files, Gillian Anderson played a special agent investigating baffling mysteries – skills that might come in handy to explain the series of ‘impossible’ pregnancies during her career.

As these photographs show, the actress, who has two sons and a daughter in real life, is filming the third series of the Netflix hit Sex Education, in which she plays divorced sex therapist Dr Jean F. Milburn, with a pronounced baby bump.

The second series finale featured the hippie sexpert and middle-aged single mother discovering that she was pregnant, despite her former partner, Jakob, having had a vasectomy. ‘That’s impossible,’ she protested.

That plot twist must have seemed oddly familiar to Ms Anderson, 52, after her experiences as Scully in the critically acclaimed sci-fi drama The X-Files.

At the end of the show’s seventh season, her fellow agent Fox Mulder, played by David Duchovny, was abducted by aliens as Scully found out she was pregnant by him, despite her own earlier abduction supposedly leaving her ‘barren’.

She eventually gave up their son for adoption.

In the second season of The X-Files revival, which aired in 2018, Mulder and Scully were reunited with their son, but decided only a new baby could heal their family.

The show ended with Scully miraculously pregnant again at the age of 54.

However, immaculate conception will, fortunately, not feature in Ms Anderson’s next appearance on our TV screens, playing Margaret Thatcher in the fourth series of the Netflix drama The Crown next month.

The series, created by Ms Anderson’s partner of four years Peter Morgan, covers the turbulent decade from 1979 when Margaret Thatcher, at the age of 53, reaches No 10 and is thrown into a challenging relationship with the Queen, six months her junior.
