A woman has sparked a debate on social media after she discovered an unusual shaped container inside her new fridge.

The Australian woman turned to the internet for an explanation after she was unable to store her eggs or soft drink cans in the clear plastic drawer with ridges that came with the refrigerator.

‘Can someone please tell me what on earth this is for? Bought a new Samsung fridge, not in the manual or website. We’ve been trying to figure it out for weeks,’ she wrote in a Facebook group.

‘It doesn’t fit eggs or cans properly.’

Her post was met with more than 670 comments, with many speculating what the tray could be used for.

‘I saw someone use it to put carrots etc in so that any condensation drips off and they last longer but I have no idea if that actually works or what it’s actually for,’ one woman wrote as she laughed.

Another joked: ‘It’s a mum’s tray… for anything. Cheese, chocolate, wine… just put a padlock on it first.’

Others said they put other items in there such as unopened cheese, chocolate, yoghurt, butter and even ice cubes.

One woman – who owned a similar fridge – said she used the container to stack her spices in the pantry.

‘Mine is in my cupboard with spices in it. The eggs in it just wobbled around, it didn’t make sense and took up so much space in the fridge,’ she said.

A second woman said: ‘I have no idea what it’s for so I just took it out and put it in a storage cupboard,’ while another added: ‘I actually took mine out and I use it to store my bars of soap in the bathroom cupboard.’

She noticed the soft drink cans were bigger than the container

Dozens of people insisted the drawer is used to store eggs.

‘Meant for eggs but mine went in the bin, it never made sense,’ one said.

‘We use it for eggs, they do sit in there side by side. I think it’s better when it’s fuller,’ another said.

‘We use ours for eggs, they sit perfectly in there,’ one wrote, while another added: ‘It’s for eggs, we have the same [fridge].’

Another woman said her husband who works for a white goods spare parts company confirmed the container is used for storing eggs.

Meanwhile, others saw the funny side to the post.

‘This post is hilarious – no one literally has any idea,’ one wrote.
