Fury’s promoter Bob Arum rips into Wilder’s manager after he claimed he still wants trilogy fight

‘He’s never read the contract!’: Tyson Fury’s promoter Bob Arum rips into Deontay Wilder’s manager after he claimed he still wants their trilogy fight – and says he’s been ‘hiding in the bushes’ until rematch clause expired

    • Tyson Fury’s proposed trilogy fight with Deontay Wilder was recently scrapped
    • Fury is set to return in the UK in December after Wilder’s rematch clause expired
    • Wilder’s manager claimed their third fight could still happen before end of year
    • Bob Arum quickly shut down those claims, insisting he hasn’t read the contract

Tyson Fury‘s promoter Bob Arum has laid into Deontay Wilder‘s manager Shelly Finkel and claimed he never even read the contract after he insisted the trilogy fight could still happen despite the rematch clause expiring.

Wilder and Fury were scheduled for their third clash in December, but the proposed fight was scrapped after a date could not be finalised with the former yet to recover from surgery on his bicep.

Fury has since announced he’ll be fighting in the UK on December 5 with former Anthony Joshua victim Carlos Takam the likeliest opponent.

The Brit was initially supposed to face Wilder again in the summer but the fight was pushed back on several occasions due to the outbreak of coronavirus and was eventually abandoned after the rematch clause – which was triggered by the American following his knockout loss in February – expired.

Despite this, Finkel said last week that Wilder would still be challenging the WBC world champion at the backend of this year.

Fury’s co-promoter Arum was quick to rubbish Finkel’s claims and made it clear that the Manchester heavyweight would not even be considering that fight.

Speaking to iFL TV, Arum said: ‘Fury has Robert Davis as his lawyer in the UK. He’s read the contract. The contract has expired. It’s clear. Shelly can say what he wants.

‘You know the thing that’s crazy about it is, the last time I talked to Shelly Finkel was the night of the fight after Wilder had been beat. And I haven’t talked to him since.

‘Shelly hides in the bushes and then when something that he sees as being averse to his fighter or himself happens, then he comes out and makes statements.

‘I am sure, I am absolutely sure, not knowing, but I think Shelly Finkel has never read the contract.’

Wilder admitted only just this month that he has not even been able to train after requiring surgery on his bicep following his crushing defeat against Fury back in February.

Fury’s first defence of his heavyweight crown has not yet been confirmed as talks with possible opponents are ongoing but 39-year-old Takam has emerged as the favourite.
