Prime Minister Boris Johnson admitted he had not spoken to Rashford since June following the Government’s first u-turn despite claims from Health Secretary Matt Hancock that they had been ‘communicating’.

He said: ‘We don’t want to see children going hungry this winter, this Christmas. Certainly not as a result of any inattention by the government – and you are not going to see that,’ he told reporters on a visit to a hospital in Berkshire.

‘I haven’t spoken to Marcus since June but what he is doing is terrific. I totally understand the issue of holiday hunger, it is there, we have to deal with it.’
