NFL free agent Eric Reid, who protested alongside Colin Kaepernick, declines practice squad invite

NFL free agent Eric Reid, who protested alongside Colin Kaepernick, declines practice squad invite from Washington nearly two years after settling collusion lawsuit with league

    • Free agent safety Eric Reid has declined an offer to join Washington’s practice squad because he feels the offer isn’t commensurate with his on-field resume
    • Reid famously protested racism alongside his then-San Francisco 49ers teammate Colin Kaepernick in 2016 by kneeling during the national anthem
    • He has been in and out of the league ever since, while accusing owners of conspiring to blackball him in retaliation for the demonstrations
    • Reid said that Washington’s offer isn’t ‘reflective or indicative’ of his ability
    • Washington (2-5) lost safety Landon Collins to a season-ending Achilles injury in Sunday’s win over Dallas. Reid’s former coach, Ron Rivera, is now in Washington
    • Last month, Rivera praised Reid, saying: ‘He’s a heck of a teammate. He’s a heck of a young man… If we didn’t [have Collins], believe me, I’d call [Reid]
    • Reid said he hasn’t received any calls from other teams despite the fact that he set Panthers records for tackles (130) and sacks (four) by a safety in 2019

Nearly two years after settling his collusion lawsuit with the NFL, free agent safety and former Pro Bowl selection Eric Reid has declined an offer to join Washington’s practice squad because he feels the offer isn’t commensurate with his on-field resume.

Reid famously protested racism alongside his then-San Francisco 49ers teammate Colin Kaepernick in 2016 by kneeling during the national anthem. He has been in and out of the league ever since, while accusing owners of conspiring to blackball him in retaliation for the demonstrations.

Washington (2-5) lost safety Landon Collins to a season-ending Achilles tendon injury in a win over Dallas on Sunday. Rookie Kamren Curl, a seventh-round pick, will replace him for now.

‘I just don’t think playing on the practice squad is reflective or indicative of my career,’ Reid told The Associated Press in a phone interview on Tuesday.

The 28-year-old Reid played two seasons for Washington coach Ron Rivera with Carolina and set two defensive franchise records for the Panthers last season.

A first-round pick by San Francisco in 2013, Reid went to the Pro Bowl in his rookie season.

Kaepernick hasn’t played in the league since that season and Reid sat out the first three weeks of the 2018 season before Carolina signed him. Both players filed collusion grievances against the NFL and settled their cases for undisclosed amounts in February 2019.

Last month, Rivera praised Reid, saying: ‘He’s a heck of a teammate. He’s a heck of a young man.’

Rivera also added: ‘If we didn’t [have Collins], believe me, I’d call him. I think he’s a guy that has the ability to play in this league and hopefully, if somebody needs a strong safety, he’s a guy they would call.’

Washington had a need and made the call but only for a practice squad spot.

Reid has been working out and waiting for an opportunity to join a team’s active roster. He said he was told Washington wants to give Curl a shot at starting.

‘I’m just not in a place to play on the practice squad right now,’ Reid said, adding that he texted Rivera to let him know his decision. ‘If they go a different direction, I’ll be ready.’

Reid said he hasn’t received any calls from other teams.

‘Quarantine has been good to me. I’ve been blessed to be with my family during a time of year I normally wouldn’t be,’ Reid said. ‘I love being with my family. Meantime, I’m training and waiting. I’m believing in God. I’m trusting in his will.’

Reid has been critical of the NFL’s sudden reversal on its attitude towards protesting players and social justice initiatives. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell admitted over the off-season that the league should have listened more to Kaepernick and other players who were voicing their concerns. Goodell went so far as to say he encouraged teams to sign Kaepernick, who has remained out of the NFL since 2016.

Specifically, Reid slammed the NFL’s ‘diabolical’ use of Kaepernick’s image for its ‘half-hearted’ social justice campaign, which dominated headlines over the league’s opening week in September.

‘What the @NFL is doing is half-hearted at best,’ Reid wrote on Twitter after the NFL opened the 2020 season with a video of Alicia Keys singing ‘Lift Every Voice and Sing,’ accompanied by footage that included both Kaepernick and himself protesting racism as members of the 49ers in 2016.

The league’s decision to play the song, considered by many to be the ‘black national anthem,’ came in response to the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis on May 25.

‘@nflcommish has gotten comfortable saying he “was wrong” as if his mere acknowledgement reconciles his admitted wrongdoing,’ Reid continued. ‘He hasn’t even called Colin to apologize, let alone reconcile, proving this is only PR for the current business climate.

‘As such, Roger Goodell uses video of Colin courageously kneeling to legitimize their disingenuous PR while simultaneously perpetuating systemic oppression, that the video he’s using fights against, by continuing to rob Colin of his career. It’s diabolical.’

In response, Kaepernick stood up for Reid, tweeting, ‘While the NFL runs propaganda about how they care about Black Life, they are still actively blackballing Eric Reid (@E_Reid35) for fighting for the Black community. Eric set 2 franchise records last year, and is one of the best defensive players in the league.’

Despite a losing record, Washington is a contender in the NFC East. The first-place Eagles are 2-4-1 and lost at Washington in Week 1.

Reid has started 98 games in seven seasons with San Francisco and Carolina. He has 519 career tackles, 11 interceptions, 45 passes defensed, six sacks, five fumble recoveries and three forced fumbles. Reid also has 17 quarterback hits and 14 tackles for a loss.

Reid had 130 tackles, four sacks, six passes defensed, two fumble recoveries and a forced fumble in 2019. The tackles and sacks are the most by a Panthers safety in one season.
