Ranting anti-abortion protesters call British film-maker ‘Jihad Jane’

‘If we were enforcing Sharia law, we’d rape you’: Ranting anti-abortion protesters call British film-maker ‘Jihad Jane’ and accuse her of ‘dressing like a w***e’ during documentary shoot outside Alabama clinic

    • Deeyah Khan was filming outside the Alabama Women’s Center in Huntsville
    • She came under vile sexist and Islamophobic attack by the protesters outside
    • One called her ‘a wicked pedophile approving Muslim’
    • Conservative Alabama has some of the toughest laws on abortion in the States

This is the shocking moment ranting anti-abortion protesters call a British film-maker ‘Jihad Jane’ and accuse her of dressing like a whore outside a clinic in Alabama.

Deeyah Khan was filming outside the Alabama Women’s Center in Huntsville to speak with the demonstrators who besiege it.

‘You know if we were out here enforcing Sharia law, we’d go ahead and take you around the corner and rape you.’ A furious Christian fundamentalist wearing a ‘Repent or Perish’ t-shirt tells Ms Khan in the footage.

‘If we were a good Muslim. If we were a good Muslim group we’d take you and your little immodest pants there around the corner and we’d have our way with you.’

He adds, ‘You want Shariah law, we got Jihad Jane right here.’

He is one of a number of men holding signs and t-shirts with bible verses which they believe support their extreme stance on abortion.

Another man wearing a ‘Make America Goodly Again’ says to Ms Khan: ‘You wicked pedophile approving Muslim.

Another tells the broadcaster: ‘You are one dumb female Muslim.’

Ms Khan, a Norwegian-British filmmaker whose mother is from Afghanistan and her father from Pakistan, was filming for her new documentary America’s War On Abortion which will air on ITV tonight at 10.45pm.

She visited the Alabama Women’s Center where security guards told her about the shocking abuse hurled at women who visit the clinic.

When Ms Khan approached the men to ask them about their views she came under vile sexist and Islamophobic attack herself.

Since 1993, 11 people have been killed for providing abortions in the United States.

The National Abortion Federation counts 84 instances of extreme violence at clinics in the last 10 years, including bombings, shootings and arson.

In Ms Khan’s documentary she also visited a clinic in Kansas with high windows. Staff there said it was designed that way so that snipers wouldn’t be able to shoot people inside.

Alabama has some of the toughest laws on abortion in America and is among the States in the ‘Bible Belt,’ which typically have more traditional interpretations of Christian teaching.

A federal judge last year temporarily blocked Alabama’s Human Life Protection Act which would have made it a felony for a doctor to perform an abortion unless a woman’s life was in immediate danger, was slated to take effect on November 15.

Earlier this year, federal judges intervened in the state once again when it tried to ban abortions and close clinic during the coronavirus pandemic.

US District Judge Myron Thompson said the state’s concerns about conserving medical equipment during the pandemic, does not ‘outweigh the serious, and, in some cases, permanent, harms imposed by the denial of an individual’s right to privacy.’

Ms Khan’s documentary comes amid rising fears among  pro-choice groups that the landmark 1973 Roe v Wade Supreme Court ruling that protects abortion is under threat.

The recent appointment of Amy Coney Barrett to the court prompted protests by feminists who believe that the new justice’s pro-life stance should disqualify her.
