Kenyan stylist Mercy Muigai reveals what it’s REALLY like dating an Australian man

Kenyan stylist reveals what it’s REALLY like dating an Australian man – from ‘zero fashion sense’ and never buying gifts to letting girls pay on first dates

    • A Kenyan woman living in Perth has shared her experience dating Aussie men
    • YouTuber Mercy Muigai claimed they are shy and only confident when drunk
    • She said they have ‘zero fashion sense’ and allow women to pay on first dates
    • Ms Muigai feels Australian men are only comfortable chatting over social media
    • She bemoaned that they ‘never give gifts’, a common gesture in African culture

Australian men have ‘zero fashion sense’, let women pay on first dates and only have the confidence to approach them when they’re drunk, a Kenyan stylist has claimed.

Mercy Muigai moved to Perth, Western Australia in early 2019 and quickly discovered that single men Down Under behave very differently to the ones she grew up with in East Africa.

She said while Kenyan men are outspoken and unafraid to pursue attractive women, Ms Muigai says their timid Australian counterparts are much more comfortable speaking to the fairer sex on dating apps or Facebook messenger than in real life.

She made the claims late Monday night in a YouTube video, where she also complained that Aussie men ‘never give gifts’ and typically allow women to pay for their own dinner – and sometimes the entire bill – on first dates.

But perhaps her most disturbing warning is that women spending the night with Australian men should expect to share the bed with their pets, which could include anything from cats and dogs to snakes.

Kenyan stylist Mercy Muigai (pictured) has learned a lot about single Australian men since moving to Perth – including their shy natures and tendency to let women pay for dinner

‘They’re going to love their pets more than you,’ she said.

‘You can’t say anything negative about the pets – you’re going to come second, the pets come first. That’s just the reality.’

But even getting to the stage of meeting a pet sounds easier said than done from what Ms Muigai says about the shyness of most Australian men.

‘Dating apps are going to come in handy because most don’t approach women, they’re not confident,’ she said.

‘If an Australian guy is going to approach you, he’s drunk in a nightclub. Go to the dating sites, you’ll find them there.’

And for any girl lucky enough to secure a date with an aloof Aussie bachelor, Ms Muigai said there’s no point expecting a fancy night out.

Ms Muigai told women from overseas who are new to the dating scene Down Under that single men are likely to turn up to a date wearing thongs and beach shorts.

‘The dress sense, oh my god!’ she said.

‘You’re going to be looking all cute on your first date and guess what, the guy you’re meeting is going to be there in thongs, a T-shirt and a pair of shorts.

‘They have zero fashion sense, they just don’t put a lot of effort in. I think it’s the culture – they’re very laid back, probably too laid back. You’ll be disappointed.’

Ms Muigai offered similar caution about Australian men’s attitude to money.

‘With men around here, you’re either going to pay for your bill, or you’re going to pay for the whole bill, so always remember to carry some money with you!’ she said.

It’s a similar story when it comes to tokens of affection, Ms Muigai claims, with Australian men more likely to re-gift something bought by their mother or ex-girlfriend than they are to spend time and money on a thoughtful present.

‘Sometimes they’ll even give you something [that  belonged to] their ex, a necklace, perfume, a ring,’ she said.

‘Maybe it’s your birthday and you’re getting something an ex left in their house…it’s weird.’
