‘We have to stay level-headed’: Everton defender Mason Holgate urges Toffees to ‘prove’ quality

‘We have to stay level-headed’: Everton defender Mason Holgate urges Toffees to ‘prove’ their quality after slumping to seventh with Manchester United defeat

    • Everton were leading the Premier League after five games of the season
    • A 3-1 defeat to Manchester United on Saturday was their third in a row
    • The Toffees now sit down in seventh and are searching to recover their form
    • Mason Holgate returned on Saturday and has some advice for his team-mates

Everton‘s form has deserted them and dumped the Toffees down in seventh after their electric start to 2020-21, and Mason Holgate is calling for a response.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side made a flying start to the new Premier League campaign, leading the top-flight after bagging four-straight victories and a point against rivals Liverpool at Goodison Park.

The tie with Jurgen Klopp’s side saw the last of that form, with losses to Southampton, Newcastle and a 3-1 home defeat to Manchester United on Saturday leaving Carlo Ancelotti with work to do on his European ambitions.

Holgate appeared for the first time this season against United, returning from a pre-season toe injury, making him well-placed to comment on his side’s struggles.

‘It was good to start the season like that but ultimately it wasn’t going to stay the same through the entire season,’ Holgate told Everton TV

‘It was important to not get carried away and think we were the best team ever. Equally, we’ll have parts like this and it is really important to not get carried away.

‘We have to stay level-headed and know how good we are as a squad and go out and prove it

The 24-year-old has called on the Toffees' experienced men to take the initiative at Everton

The 24-year-old has called on the Toffees’ experienced men to take the initiative at Everton

‘People like me and Seamus Coleman have been here a long time, so it is down to us to show what this club is about and show that fight.

‘We need to step up as a team. It is three games, there is nothing we can do about them. We have to put it right going forward.’

Holgate became one of the first names of Ancelotti’s team-sheet last season and will be keen to quickly prove his worth to the Italian again.

The 24-year-old couldn’t stop United on Saturday though, with Bruno Fernandes running the show, bagging a double before Edinson Cavani grabbed his first goal for the Old Trafford side.

‘It is nice to be back, it has been a difficult period and I’ve missed a lot of time playing’, Holgate added.

‘But to come back and lose – and not make the impact I wanted – it hurts even more.’
