    Unemployment rate spiked to 4.8% in last quarter

    Unemployment rate spiked to 4.8% in last quarter – the highest since 2016 – as coronavirus crisis hammered the economy with 782,000 fewer workers on payroll than in March

    Unemployment spiked by 0.7 per cent in the last quarter as the coronavirus crisis hammered the economy, it was revealed today.

    Official figures showed the rate in the three months to September was 4.8 per cent, 0.9 percentage points higher than a year earlier and 0.7 percentage points up on the previous quarter.

    It was a 0.3 percentage point rise in the rolling three-monthly rate from June-August. 

    The numbers of payroll employees in the UK is now down 782,000 since the crisis began in March.
