Comedian David Baddiel deletes gay sex joke accusing Boris Johnson of ‘sh******’ key aide Lee Cain

Comedian David Baddiel deletes gay sex joke tweet accusing Boris Johnson of ‘sh******’ his outgoing key aide Lee Cain after he is branded ‘homophobic’

    • Comedian David Baddiel tweeted joke that Boris Johnson is having sex with aide
    • Tweet met with claims Baddiel was homophobic by using gay sex as a punchline
    • Others believed comedian was referencing that Johnson ‘has a lot of affairs’

Comedian David Baddiel has deleted a tweet he made joking that Boris Johnson was having sex with his key aide after being branded ‘homophobic’.

Boris Johnson’s director of communications Lee Cain dramatically quit yesterday after a brutal standoff with Carrie Symonds.

Tweeting in response to the situation Baddiel wrote: ‘Why exactly is Carrie Symonds opposed to the appointment of Lee Cain? I can only assume Boris is s******* him.’

The tweet was met with claims Baddiel was being homophobic by using gay sex as a punchline.

Tweeting in response to the situation Baddiel wrote on Twitter: ‘Why exactly is Carrie Symonds opposed to the appointment of Lee Cain? I can only assume Boris is s******* him.’

Ryan John Butcher, an editor at PinkNews, tweeted: ‘Ah good, we’re at the ‘must be having gay sex’ stage of johnson’s government it’s the year 2020 and I am once again reminding comedians that belittling leaders by implying they’re gay is simply homophobic.’

Others on Twitter believed the comedian was referencing that Johnson ‘has a lot of affairs’ and ‘a history of serial s*******’.

Marc Thomas tweeted in response to Mr Butcher’s critique: ‘Oh I didn’t see it like that. I think it’s more because Boris has a lot of affairs. It’s funnier that way as well.’

Jamie Mccafferty added: ‘Was implying simply, as a matter of public record, Johnson has a history of serial s******* … no homophobia was inferred, and on reading again, still didn’t see it.’

While others supported Mr Butcher’s response, Michael Etheridge tweeted: ‘Well done for calling it out. It was a boring gay joke. Pure and simple.’

Baddiel responded to Mr Butcher’s criticism by deleting the tweet and writing an explanation, he tweeted: ‘My intent was a joke about BJ being serially unfaithful, and how his fiancee, not an elected official, should not have a political reason vs the appointment of Lee Cain, but might be sexually suspicious of everyone BJ meets. But I’m not gay and happy to delete if it is offensive.’

Mr Butcher responded: ‘Bit of a weird joke david, mate. having to explain ‘intent’ is rarely a good sign.’

To which Baddiel hit back: ‘I don’t agree, Ryan, with that. I don’t hold with the modern principle that impact is more important than intent.

‘However I do believe that it’s not my place to define offence for a minority I don’t belong to, so have deleted it. Thanks for your input.’

The Longstanding Johnson aide Lee Cain, a Vote Leave veteran and Dominic Cummings loyalist, announced he was resigning despite being touted for promotion to No10 chief of staff just hours earlier.

The departure was the culmination of a bitter power struggle inside Mr Johnson’s top team, with rival factions battling for supremacy even as the government struggles to tackle the coronavirus crisis.

Mr Cummings (pictured left yesterday) had pushed for his ally to be promoted in the face of opposition from the PM’s fiancée Carrie Symonds (right), who warned his appointment would be ‘a mistake’

Mr Cummings had pushed for his ally to be appointed despite warnings from the PM’s fiancée Ms Symonds – herself a former Conservative Party head of media – that it would be ‘a mistake’ given how the campaign against the pandemic had gone so far.

She is said to have complained the No10 operation was being run in an ‘uncollegiate’ way and the PM was not getting ‘good advice’.

Mr Butcher later tweeted: ‘I think a good rule of thumb is straight men shouldn’t make jokes about gay sex i think queer people being sensitive to jokes is fair given *gestures at everything* at least David Baddiel actually *listened* which is sadly all too rare.’
