Wahroonga shooting occurred as father went to confront son-in-law

EXCLUSIVE: Elderly father went to confront his dying daughter’s estranged husband over ugly split as she fights terminal illness – when dispute turned ugly and SHOTS were fired leaving both men in hospital

    • Man in 50s has been shot in the neck during an incident in Sydney’s north shore
    • Police and several ambulances are at address in Wahroonga, an affluent suburb
    • Victim flown to Royal North Shore Hospital in a serious condition on Thursday
    • Man, 74, suffered facial injuries, he was taken to hospital under police guard
    • It is understood the horror incident occurred between a man and his son-in-law

An elderly man went to talk to his daughter’s ex-husband about his treatment of her when an argument escalated and the younger of the pair was shot.

Mirko Uskovic, 51, was confronted by his father-in-law Bill Murrell, 74, in the front of his home at Wahroonga, in Sydney’s northern suburbs, just after 10am on Thursday.

Uskovic is in the middle of a separation from Murrell’s daughter Danielle, with whom he has four daughters.

Friends of the pair told Daily Mail Australia that Mrs Uskovic – a once high-flying and prominent businesswoman – is suffering from a terminal illness and the marriage had deteriorated in recent months.

‘She is so lovely, she’s really sick and it’s just heartbreaking to see,’ the friend said.

‘They are the nicest family and the last people you would expect this to happen to.’

When Murrell arrived at his son-in-law’s home on Highlands Avenue tensions quickly escalated and a shot was fired, with neighbours reporting a ‘big bang’ to Triple Zero.

Police rushed to the scene and found Uskovic suffering from a gunshot wound to the neck and Murrell nursing facial injuries nearby. Two firearms were seized by officers.

Both men are now in a stable condition at Royal North Shore Hospital.

In recent months Mrs Uskovic and her youngest daughter have moved back in with her parents.

The breakdown of her marriage to Uskovic, a part-time window cleaner, has resulted in police applying for a restraining order against him on behalf of her mother Donna Murrell.

An interim order is currently in place and a hearing is set for March 2021.

Police have been regulars at the home where Uskovic has been living alone in recent times.

In late September officers raided the home and found 41 marijuana plants stored in a back shed.

Uskovic pleaded guilty to cultivating a small quantity of a prohibited plant and is due to be sentenced in Hornsby Local Court on December 8.

After spending the day at Uskovic’s Wahroonga home, detectives moved to a home nearby where they gathered more evidence.

A rifle and ammunition were among the items taken from the home in brown paper bags.

Wahroonga local Ben Suleyman, 18, said he heard a loud ‘bang’ while playing with his dogs, but did not think anything of it until he saw helicopters hovering overhead.

‘I was out in the garden with the dog, I’m literally just one street over, and I heard this big bang, just one,’ Mr Suleyman said.

‘I didn’t know it was a gunshot so I think much of it, but then once I heard the police and the helicopter I jumped in my car and drove around to see what was going on.

‘I met the older man once, he was a pleasant guy. He’d just bought his daughter a car.’

Another neighbour heard the men arguing, and then a gun shot, and called police.

Kuring-Gai Police Superintendent Barry Vincent said when police arrived two guns were found on the property and seized.

‘The relationship between the two parties is still yet to be formally established, but we believe they are known to each other,’ Supt Vincent said.

‘We received a call through Triple Zero from a neighbour and police responded very quickly.

‘Upon attending the scene they challenged both parties to ensure all firearms were secured.’

Wahroonga is one of Sydney’s most prestigious suburbs, with many wealthy families attracted to the big homes and the fact three of the city’s top private schools are close by – Knox Grammar, Abbotsleigh and Barker College.

A 74-year-old man was also injured at the scene and taken to hospital under police guard

Longtime local resident Louis Bugeja, 63, heard the disturbance on the street and came outside to see what was going on.

‘The first thing we heard from police was that there had been a domestic dispuite, and they believed a stabbing, but then we heard it was a gunshot,’ Mr Bugeja said.

‘I saw the guys being loaded in the back of the ambulance, the younger guy was holding his neck.’

Mr Bugeja said there had been several incidents on the street in recent years, but not in the house related to Thursday’s shooting.
