Alcohol that is good for you? Byron Bay hipsters combine kombucha and beer

Move over alcoholic seltzers! Byron Bay hipsters create a ‘healthy drink’ by mixing kombucha with BEER – and it’s coming to a pub near you

    • A new beverage is promising health benefits alongside a boozy buzz

A new beverage is promising health benefits alongside a boozy buzz.

Byron Bay brewery Stone and Wood has partnered with the Kombucha Brewing Co to release a series of alcoholic kombuchas.

The company has launched three styles of low carbohydrate Kombucha Beers ahead of the Australian summer.

The ‘Sneaky Bucha of Byron’ comes in three styles: a wheat beer ‘Summer’, an extra pale ale ‘XPA’ and a lager.

Each beer is full strength at 4 per cent alcohol content but claims to contain 25 per cent less carbohydrates than full-strength beers.

The drinks combine the popular hipster favourite beverage with the classic summer refreshment, promising a boozy boost to your gut-health.

The fermentation process used to make Kombucha is believed to boost intestinal health, improve immune function and aid in food digestion.

It comes hot off the heels of the rise in popularity of alcoholic seltzers like White Claw.

Co-founder Paul Tansley said they are hoping to tap into this same market seeking the appeal of a less fattening alcoholic option, reported BrewsNews.

‘There’s a lot of hype around alcoholic seltzers coming into this summer & the Sneaky Bucha appeals to the same unisex, health-conscious crowd being Lower Carb, but does it with something we know Aussie drinkers love – beer,’ he said.

‘People are looking for products that they can enjoy and also feel a little better about themselves, so we’re really excited to bring the Sneaky Bucha of Byron to Aussie drinkers,’ Co-founder Cam MacFarlane said.

‘With lower carbs we think of it as a little win in a tin.’

According to Brews News the crazy combination is believed to be a world-first.

But the drink’s release comes a year after a similar style product was introduced to the market, created through a secondary fermentation process.

Alcoholic Kombucha ‘K.Booch’ was the brain child of Nick Cogger and produced out of Torquay in Victoria.

At the time he described the drink as ‘more like a ginger beer or cider, even a craft beer,’ than pre-mixed drinks which use a spirit as a base.

‘We promote K.Booch as a ‘Better for You Alcohol Choice’, with transparent labelling, lower ABV and lower sugar than your traditional RTDs or ciders’ he told the Shout.
