Brisbane brothers paid $920,000 by Metro North Hospital and Health Service after loss of mother

Young brothers whose fashion designer mum tragically died of a brain seizure aged 36 are awarded $920,000 in an out-of-court settlement with a Queensland hospital

    • Brisbane mother Lauren Sian Brooks died from brain seizure in September, 2017
    • Partner Chris Percy filed claim against Metro North Hospital and Health Service
    • MNHHS reached an out-of-court settlement of $920,000 with the Brooks family
    • Money will be divided between the two sons Alfie, 7, and five-year-old Sonny

Two young brothers have been awarded $920,000 by one of the largest public health districts in the country after their mother died from a brain seizure.

Brisbane fashion designer Lauren Sian Brooks was just days away from celebrating her 37th birthday when she passed away in September, 2017.

Her partner Chris Percy filed a claim of loss of dependency against the Metro North Hospital and Health Service – Queensland‘s largest public health district.

An affidavit, which is understood to contain details of Ms Brooks’ death, has been sealed into an envelope and cannot be opened without a court order, Courier Mail reported.

The MNHHS reached an out-of-court settlement and will award $425,000 to the couple’s sons Alfie, 7, and $495,000 to Sonny Percy, 5.

The money will be invested and managed by Australian Executor Trustees.

Ms Brooks was born in Chester, in England, and moved to Queensland in 2008.

She worked as a fashion designer and collaborated with clothing giants such as H&M and Zara.

Ms Brooks and her father Roger then launched organic baby clothing business Baby Baumbach in 2014.

Her sudden death sent shockwaves throughout the community who remembered Ms Brooks as an avid traveller and poet.

Brother Gareth Brooks took to Facebook and described her as a ‘beautiful, brilliant and incredibly naughty little sister’.

‘Lauren was the sunshine in our lives and although she has gone, the sun will shine on,’ he said.

Friend Colleen Donaghy set up a GoFundMe page to raise money for Ms Brooks’ children.

‘Lauren had the superpower of friendliness, and cared so much about all those around her,’ the page reads.

‘Tragically she has been taken away from her family and all those she loved too soon.’

The campaign has raised just under $50,000 – five times its target of $10,000.
