Joe Gomez will battle to prove his fitness in time for the European Championships – but the likelihood of the Liverpool defender regaining his fitness in time appears remote.
But his likely absence could open the door to another centre-back in time for next summer’s tournament.

Southgate says that he is always monitoring the progress of English central defenders
‘I talked a little bit about Conor [Coady] and the impact he has had but there are some other good centre-backs in the league and we are always monitoring and assessing what the batting order should be.
‘There’s a lot of good players around. We have to keep looking.’
Here, Sportsmail assess who could step into the squad following Gomez’s serious injury.
If he can start playing regularly then you’d imagine the Manchester City defender has a good chance of regaining his England place.
Having been an integral part of Southgate’s plans during World Cup 2018, Stones would slot back in seamlessly and certain possess the attributes Southgate requires in his central defender.
But whether or not he will play enough football between now and the end of the season to play himself back into England contention remains unclear. He has made four appearances so far this season, three of those coming in the Champions League.
Manchester City defender John Stones could earn a recall to Southgate’s England squad
Has played a key role in Brighton’s defensive plans this season and has worn the armband in Lewis Dunk’s absence through suspension.
A commanding central defender who is genuinely two-footed – his attributes make him a clear contender for international recognition given Southgate’s demand that his players are comfortable in possession.
Webster’s comfort with the ball at his feet is underlined by the fact he is currently fourth in the Premier League for passes with 587. England’s assistant manager Steve Holland is a regular at the Amex Stadium and Webster’s performances haven’t gone unnoticed.

Like Stones, Tarkowski is no stranger to international football having already made two appearances for England.
But his last England call up came prior to World Cup 2018 and there is doubt over whether the international boat has sailed for Tarkowski.
Burnley are currently second bottom of the Premier League, but Tarkowski remains widely recognised as one of the top-flight’s best out and out defenders. But doubts over his ability on the ball could hinder any hopes he has of breaking back into Southgate’s plans in Gomez’s absence.
Burnley centre-back James Tarkowski will be eager to add to his two England appearances
Has been tipped for an England call-up in the past but is still to break into the international scene.
The Newcastle captain is a regular in Steve Bruce’s team and at the age of 27 has a wealth of top-level experience behind him.
Comfortable on the ball and an obvious leader given his position at St James’ Park he ticks a lot of boxes for Southgate. But you have to wonder why Lascelles hasn’t made the grade thus far.
Newcastle’s Jamaal Lascelles, who has good leadership qualities, is another option for England
Another who has been mooted for a senior England call. Injury has stunted his momentum somewhat in recent months but he is fit again and back in the Arsenal team.
He may be an outside bet but Holding is a player well known to England staff, the central defender has five Under-21 caps to his name. That always helps. Keeping his place in Mikel Arteta’s team will be key to Holding’s chances of breaking into the senior squad.
