Manchester United ‘on red alert’ as Marc Overmars and Edwin van der Sar target new challenge

Manchester United ‘on red alert in director of football chase’ as Ajax chief Marc Overmars targets ambitious new challenge alongside Edwin van der Sar as pair ‘want to win the Champions League or Europa League’

    • Marc Overmars, the Ajax director of football, has now hinted at a new challenge
    • Manchester United may be on alert in a bid to overhaul their transfer department
    • Overmars and Edwin van der Sar, an Old Trafford legend, may soon leave Ajax

Manchester United have been alerted to a possible new face in their attempts to overhaul their transfer department after a stunning admission from Marc Overmars.

Overmars, the director of football at Ajax, has revealed his desire to take on a new challenge in the near future alongside colleague, and Old Trafford legend, Edwin van der Sar.

The Mirror claim that Overmars, 47, would satisfy United’s criteria for the position which will be responsible for transforming their outdated recruitment model.

United have openly looked to recruit a director of football over the last three seasons with criticism levelled at the club after a series of poor, and costly, signings.

Overmars, who played for Arsenal between 1997 and 2000, has helped Ajax build and nurture their esteemed policy in the market, as well as their world-renowned youth system.

And his latest comments, which appear to indicate a willingness to move on from Amsterdam, may be taken on board by the United hierarchy.

‘When I was appointed in this job at Ajax I knew I only wanted to stay for three or four years maximum,’ he said.

‘I have been here eight seasons now! For me – but just as much for Edwin – it is sure that we are not going to carry on here until we are 60.

‘This job at Ajax is costing too much energy. The whole of the Netherlands is constantly on my back and has an opinion about us.

‘The job has brought a lot of great things too. Edwin and I are proud that we have brought Ajax back where it should be in Europe.’

United’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, and chief transfer negotiator Matt Judge, have been forced to bear the brunt of the ire from the club’s fanbase after yet another disappointing summer.

A deal for Jadon Sancho failed to materialise, and it was only a slew of deadline day additions which somewhat spared the blushes of the board.

The club do not currently have a director of football, a move which has also sparked confusion with a host of elite European outfits choosing to adopt the method.

It remains to be seen whether Overmars would be interested in the position, or if van der Sar would be open to return, although the Dutch duo’s sights are certainly aimed high.

‘We had one shared ambition – we wanted Ajax to reach a European final,’ Overmars added. ‘Which one did not matter. We managed that in 2017, and now we want more.

‘We want to win the Champions League or Europa League.’

Van der Sar holds a boardroom role at Ajax and is understood to have greased the wheels for Donny van de Beek’s £40million switch to United in the summer.
