Merrick says in the episode: ‘My father was dying of cancer and I visited him and spent some time with him and then I had to take a flight interstate.

‘I got off the plane and I got a message on my phone and I had begun listening to the message from my father.

‘He said, ‘son I’ve had a turn, they’ve taken me to the hospital.”

Merrick says that he panicked, and deleted the voicemail before he thought better of it – and that ‘impatience’ is his biggest regret in life.

‘I don’t know if I panicked, or if I was impatient. I wanted to speak to him so I just pressed five and deleted the message,’ he said referring to the number five, which gives the voicemail the command to erase the entry.

Speaking of coping with his father’s death, which occurred in 2007, the TV star said that the pair were close and he was ‘shook up’ when he lost him.

He told the Directing Staff: ‘I found that very difficult, very difficult, I was very close to my father.

In an earlier episode, Merrick confessed that his struggle with anxiety and depression was what prompted him to sign up for the show.

‘I’m doing this course to completely change myself from what I was. Everybody knows me as just a happy-go-lucky kind of guy…’ he explained.

‘But I haven’t felt that way for a while. And I want to feel that way again.’
