A Broadway stagehand plummeted to his death while working at the Winter Garden Theatre in Times Square.

Peter Wright, 54, from Milford, Connecticut fell 50 feet from scaffolding at about 8:45am on Thursday as he carried out restoration work on the theater which is 109 years old.

Paramedics rushed him to Mt. Sinai Morningside in Manhattan but were unable to save his life.

‘Pete was a force of nature, often doing the work of three men,’ wrote Dylan Foley in a stagehand’s blog.

‘He had a dry wit and an unstoppable work ethic. If you asked for something from Pete, his line was, “For you, the grid’s the limit.”‘

Wright, who for many years worked at the nearby August Wilson theater, was admired by others in his trade.

‘I once spent an entire day with Pete up in the grid, just me and him and all day long,’ wrote colleague Raymond Pesce, reports the Daily News. ‘We hauled bricks and arbors. Long, hard day but it seemingly passed so quickly because he was so pleasant to work with. This hurts every one of us.’

Friends and relatives paid tribute on his wife’s Marcie Lowy-Wright’s Facebook page.

‘Pete always had a smile for the kids and I. He was a wonderful man,’ one friend wrote.

‘I am shocked and saddened by the news, nothing but fond memories of Pete, my heart goes out to you and the boys,’ added another.

‘We forget this can be a very dangerous thing we do,’ noted another Facebook poster.

The owners of the August Wilson Theatre, Jujamcyn Theaters, lit their marquee over the weekend in memory of Wright.

‘Our Union is in its darkest days with his passing and the grief for many is unbearable,’ James Claffey, the stagehand’s union president wrote.

‘Peter Wright had a work ethic that was nothing short of exemplary, was extremely talented and skilled in his craft, and he was one of the finest riggers/flyman in our industry.’

Beetlejuice the musical was the most recent production to be performed at The Winter Garden Theatre before all shows were shut down by the coronavirus pandemic.

Performances on Broadway are not expected to resume before May 2021.

Broadway theaters are currently closed until at least May 2021 due to COVID but the August Wilson, lit its marquee over the weekend in tribute to Wright
