South Australia adds pizza bar to hotspo list after confirming five new cases

High schools, supermarkets and a pizza bar added to South Australia’s growing list of hotspots after confirming five new cases – as the state reveals details about a ‘mystery’ virus spreader

    • Five new coronavirus infections were recorded in South Australia on Tuesday
    • Infections are attached to emerging cluster linked to a family in north Adelaide
    • Health authorities suspect another 14 cases, to be confirmed in coming days
    • SA Health released urgent warning for diners at a pizza restaurant in Woodville

South Australians who visited a pizza restaurant over a two-week period must self-isolate immediately as the coronavirus cluster in Adelaide continues to grow.

There were five new infections reported on Tuesday, with four linked to an extended family in the city’s north and one under investigation.

The Parafield cluster has officially climbed to 20 cases but SA Health officials have also identified 14 other people who are considered at high risk of having the virus.

They have been tested and are all in quarantine as a precaution. They are all considered close contacts of existing cases.

Residents are seen waiting for a coronavirus test in Adelaide on Tuesday, following an outbreak in the northern suburbs

‘This is a very, very worrying situation. I’m not going to underestimate the concern I have about this,’ Chief Public Health Officer Nicola Spurrier said.

‘If we all work together, we will get on top of it, but it is certainly early days.’

SA Health issued an urgent health alert for diners at Woodville Pizza Bar overnight.

‘Anyone who visited or got takeaway (including delivery) from the Woodville Pizza Bar, 58 Woodville Road, Woodville on 6 – 16 November must immediately self-quarantine,’ health officials said.

‘People who visited across this period should seek testing as soon as possible.

‘They must go directly to the testing location, wear a mask and alert the staff that they have visited the pizza bar.’

A returned traveller who arrived from overseas on November 2 has been confirmed as the source of a coronavirus cluster that is growing in Adelaide.

Professor Spurrier said testing of genetic material from the Parafield cluster had officially been linked to the traveller in hotel quarantine.

It’s also been confirmed that it spread into the community after a cleaner at the Peppers Hotel came in contact with the virus, most likely on a surface, and then infected members of her family.

As a result, all those in quarantine at the hotel have been told they will be moved and are required to start their 14-day isolation period again.

‘We understand the frustration of the guests and we thank them for their assistance as we take every required step to prioritise the health and safety of all South Australians,’ SA Health said in a statement.

A student at Roma Mitchell Secondary College in Gepps Cross is among the fresh cases.

Roma Mitchell Secondary College announced on Tuesday the school would shut after a student contracted the virus.

‘The Department for Education has enacted its COVID-19 protocol and will shut the site for a minimum of 24 hours,’ a statement read.

‘Students have been instructed to go home and stay there until further instructions.

‘Public health officials are carrying out contact tracing and the Department for Education and SA Health will inform anyone who needs to self-isolate.’

SA Health has ordered all swimmers who attended The Aquadome in Elizabeth, north of Adelaide, between 11.00am and 1.30pm on Saturday to self-quarantine for 14 days.

Patients who visited the emergency department of Lyell McEwin Hospital in Elizabeth Vale between 5.30pm on Friday and 8am on Saturday are also required to isolate for two weeks.

SA Health is contacting everyone who was at the hospital and the pool during the listed times.

They have also identified more than dozens of venues where visitors should ‘monitor for symptoms and get tested immediately if symptoms appear’.

They include supermarkets, shopping centres, restaurants and bus routes.

Earlier, SA Health announced Mawson Lakes School and Preschool site closed all its services.

‘On the advice of SA Health, a large number of people who attended the Mawson Lakes School or co-located community early learning centre between 11 and 13 November are required to self-isolate for the 14 days up to and including 27 November,’ a statement read.

The site will be closed until November 30.

The fresh cluster has prompted the government to reimpose a range of coronavirus restrictions.

Pubs, clubs and restaurants are limited to 100 people per venue from Tuesday, with one person per four square metres and no stand-up drinking.

Table bookings and home gatherings will be capped at 10 people, with funerals limited to 50 and weddings to 150.

Gyms and recreation centres will be closed for two weeks and community sport fixtures will be cancelled – but schools will stay open.

Hair and nail salon workers and tattooists must wear masks, and general mask wearing is strongly advised where social distancing is not possible.

Adelaide residents said they had witnessed panic buying as people rushed to the shops to stock up in anticipation of restrictions. International flights to the city have been suspended.

The cluster could derail national plans to open state borders before Christmas.

All states except Western Australia have committed to easing restrictions by December 25.

But Queensland, the Northern Territory, Tasmania and WA have now slammed the gates shut on South Australia.

NSW and Victoria have increased screening for Adelaide arrivals.

Federal authorities are keeping a close eye on Adelaide’s coronavirus cluster, with more troops preparing to travel to South Australia.

Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt has praised South Australians for getting tested, encouraging people without symptoms to also be checked for coronavirus.

‘We are looking for each and every person who might have in any way, shape or form been exposed to come forward,’ he told reporters in Canberra on Tuesday.

Mr Hunt said there were 100 Australian Defence Force troops on the ground in South Australia, with authorities meeting to map out how much extra support was needed.

They will be deployed immediately after decisions are made.
