Tasmanian man who locked girlfriend and stepson in dog cage could be free in less than three years

Monster who locked his girlfriend and young stepson in a cage and HOSED them down could be freed from jail in less than three years – despite a horrific history of family violence

    • Man with history of abuse, locked up girlfriend and stepson in a wire dog cage
    • He was found guilty of persistent family violence from May 2018 to June 2019
    • Tasmanian was sentenced to five years’ jail with non-parole period of three years
    • Court heard man strangled, punched, jabbed keys into his partner until she bled

A repeat family violence offender in Tasmania who locked his girlfriend and young stepson in a wire dog cage and hosed them with water could be released from jail in less than three years.

The man, who has a history of abusing women, was found guilty by a jury of persistent family violence from May 2018 to June 2019.

He was sentenced this week in the Supreme Court to five years’ jail with a non-parole period of three years.

The man would lock his girlfriend and stepson in a wire dog cage before hosing them down with water (stock)

After a car trip and argument, he wielded a hunting knife, ordered his partner into the outdoor cage before turning a garden hose on her and her child.

‘You did not let them out until sometime later, after you had calmed down,’ Justice Robert Peace said in sentencing.

On other occasions, the man hit his partner in the head with a torch, strangled her, slammed her head into a fireplace, punched her in the back and jabbed keys in her hand until she started bleeding.

‘The offences themselves are overlaid with ongoing emotional abuse, controlling conduct and intimidation,’ Justice Pearce said.

‘You abused the trust inherent in domestic relationships. Some of the attacks involved especially cruel, demeaning and humiliating conduct.’

The man has a history of family violence spanning for a period more than a decade

The man has a history of family violence spanning for a period more than a decade

His jail sentence was backdated to February 2020, when he was due to be released from prison for other offences, meaning his non-parole period runs out in February 2023.

The man has a history of family violence stretching back more than a decade.

He was jailed for 15 months in 2016 for assault and breaching a family violence order 16 times in relation to another woman.

In August last year, he was sentenced to nine months in prison for breaking family violence orders in relation to his more recent partner.

In a period after June 2019 he emotionally abused her, threatened to tie her to a chair, beat her and have her child taken away.
