UFC star Israel Adesanya is ‘confident’ his next opponent will be light heavyweight champion Jan Blachowicz despite veteran Glover Teixeira’s calls for title shot following win over Thiago Santos

    • After conquering at middleweight, Adesanya wants to fight at 205 pounds
    • He’s confident light heavyweight champ Jan Blachowicz will be his next fight
    • There are doubts if this will happen after Glover Teixeira demanded a title shot

Israel Adesanya is ‘confident’ that his next fight inside the octagon will be against Jan Blachowicz for the UFC light heavyweight title.

The 31-year-old has conquered the middleweight division and is now looking to make the step up as he bids to become a two-weight champion.

UFC president Dana White recently announced that he is planning on Adesanya moving up to 205 pounds with his first fight to be for light-heavyweight gold.

However, not long after, UFC veteran Glover Teixeira threw his hat in the ring following a dominant win over Thiago Santos and has since demanded his opportunity for a title shot.

And while White admitted that Teixeira’s win gave him something to think about in terms of who Blachowicz will be fight next, Adesanya believes he will be fighting for the light-heavyweight title next.

‘I’m pretty confident it [Blachowicz] will be my next opponent,’ Adesanya told MMA Fighting

‘Glover had an amazing fight. He did very well. If I’m being objectively honest, rightly so he calls for a title shot cause he feels like he’s up there in age and this is his second shot.

‘But I got there first and I feel like I’ve got the right cards in my hand to make this happen. Not saying he’s not going to get a title shot but I was first in line.’

The Nigerian also admitted that he was impressed by Blachowicz’s career comeback and has given the Polish fighter credit where credit is due.

‘I’ve been impressed by his comeback from a losing record in the UFC,’ Adesanya said about Blachowicz.

‘Where most guys would have been cut, to come back and grab the belt in the fashion that he has, I’ve been impressed.’

Last month, Blachowicz promised ‘fireworks’ and suggested March next year for a fight with Adesanya.

However, UFC veteran Glover Teixeira has emerged as a contender to challenge the Pole

He won the title vacated by Jon Jones when he stopped Dominick Reyes in October and is now preparing for a mega-fight with ‘The Last Stylebender’.

He told 1 NEWS: ‘Jared Cannonier was the option for this year but we’ve taken that option off the table.

‘Now we want to fight next year and our preferred fight next year is at [light heavyweight].

‘If we have to push it to next year, then our preferred option, the fight that we are going to try and negotiate to the best of our ability is going to be at 205 [pounds] for the title.’

Blachowicz, meanwhile, congratulated Teixeira following his win in Las Vegas, and said the contender is deserving of a title fight. The Pole will not fight until March, due to his partner being pregnant, and said he will fight Teixeira if Adesanya does not want to wait.

White said it is hard to deny the Brazilian a shot at the title following his dominant win

‘Great fight and incredible run by @gloverteixeira. You totally deserve to fight for the title and get taste of the #LegendaryPolishPower. If Adesanya can’t wait till March, let’s go #UFCVegas13,’ he tweeted.

Plans for the light heavyweight division have not been decided yet, and the UFC supremo said he has some serious considerations to make following Teixeira’s win.

‘That’s something we need to figure out,’ White added. ‘But I heard him and I agree with him and I’m taking him serious. So, yeah. I’m not going to doubt this guy any more.’
