Lindsey Vonn is ‘pretty much’ fearless: ‘I just don’t get afraid’

Gold medalist Lindsey Vonn is ‘pretty much’ fearless and reveals she was ‘definitely different’ growing up: ‘I just don’t get afraid’

Lindsey Vonn was destined to press the limits.

The 36-year-old Olympic gold medalist opened up about growing up with preternatural fearlessness, revealing that she just doesn’t ‘get afraid’ during an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show on Thursday.

Vonn, an alpine skier, went on to tell Drew that her goal to get better and go faster down the mountain led to eschew tradition and opt to wear men’s skis over women’s.

Mind of a champion: Lindsey Vonn opened up about growing up with preternatural fearlessness, revealing that she just doesn’t ‘get afraid’ during an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show on Thursday

Lindsey and her adorable black and white dog joined Drew on set, sitting the requisite six-feet apart for proper social distancing.

During the segment, Drew told her celebrity guest that she reminder her of her own fearless little eight-year-old daughter Olive.

‘She is the most go-for-it kid which is all you can ever dream of as a parent,’ Drew told Lindsey. ‘Like she sees a giant wave and hurls herself into it, she runs and jumps stairs, she’s just that fearless kid.’

‘That’s awesome you can’t teach that,’ the blonde athlete responded. ‘No you cannot teach that, that’s what I feel like.

Lindsey explained that, as the oldest of five, she quickly realized that none of her siblings shared her fearlessness and that it was something unique to her.

‘I was definitely different,’ she admitted. ‘And they were very motivated and hardworking but they always had that fear factor. Something maybe is amiss upstairs but I just don’t get afraid at pretty much anything.’

Throughout her illustrious professional skiing career, Lindsey’s fearlessness led her to a record-setting 82 World Cup victories and a gold and two bronze Olympic medals.

She retired last year as the winningest female skier in history.

In order to ‘push the limits’ in her career, Lindsey explained to Drew that she didn’t compete in women’s skis and, instead, wore men’s which are ‘better and faster.’

‘No one else really did it before I did it and then they were like, “You’re crazy,” and they were laughing at me and then I won and then they were like, “Oh maybe she’s onto something,” she explained.

Skis designed for men are stiffer and, Lindsey said, require more strength to turn which makes them a bit more difficult to use.

‘If you have the strength to turn them then you actually can generate more speed,’ she said.

‘I always was trying to push the limits and find new ways to be faster and my ski technician used to work for Bode Miller and he’s like, “Well why don’t we try some of these skis,” and I was so much faster right off the get, and that was it,’ Vonn added.

The Olympian’s courage extends to other parts of her life as well – including her no-fear approach to handling internet trolls.

Last month the star clapped back at body shamers who criticized her after she shared bikini photos on Instagram.

In the statement, Lindsey said she was ‘proud’ to have never undergone any sort of plastic surgery as she reflected on all the ‘ruthless comments’ that have hurt her.

‘I’ve posted quite a few swimsuit pics lately, which is scarier than it seems,’ she began. ‘Even as an athlete there are ruthless comments and media stories that tear apart my body and I admit it sometimes hurts me.

‘I’m a normal person and sometimes I slouch, my stomach folds over, my cellulite shows on my butt, or I don’t fill out my swimsuit top just right….But, I always remember how my body has helped me achieve amazing things in my life and I am proud of how strong I am.

‘I’m not a size zero and that’s perfectly fine with me. One thing I can promise all of you is that I never Photoshop my photos and am proud to officially never had any plastic surgery of any kind,’ she said at the time.

Currently, Vonn is quarantining with her professional hockey player fiance P.K. Subban.

Lindsey and Subban have been engaged for over a year now but, like so many other engaged couples, are in a bit of limbo when it comes to their upcoming nuptials.
