Lorde, 23, reveals the real reason she quit social media and went into hiding for EIGHTEEN months

Lorde, 24, reveals the real reason she quit social media and mysteriously went into hiding for EIGHTEEN months… as she reemerges with her boyfriend Justin Warren, 41

She was recently spotted with her boyfriend for the first time in 18 months after taking a step away from the spotlight.

And now New Zealand singer Lorde, 24, has revealed the reason reason she quit social media and went into ‘hiding’.

The Royals hitmaker says she ‘peaced out’ because she felt like she was ‘losing her free will’.

Retreating: New Zealand singer Lorde, 24, has revealed the reason reason she quit social media and went into ‘hiding’

The Kiwi star decided to step back from the likes of Twitter and Instagram because she felt ‘massive amounts of stress’ about the planet, racism and police brutality.

‘Part of what made me peace out on social media, apart from feeling like I was losing my free will, was the massive amounts of stress I was feeling about our planet, about systemic racism, and about police brutality in this country,’ she told Interview magazine.

Lorde, whose real name is Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O’Connor, previously insisted she is ‘working out how to practise activism’ whilst ‘refraining from social media’ following the death of George Floyd in May.

She said: ‘You probably weren’t expecting to hear from me for another few months, but I can’t ask for your attention one week and go silent on something like this the next. It’s hard to strike a balance between self-serving social media displays and true action.

‘But part of being an ally is knowing when to speak and when to listen, and I know that white silence right now is more damaging than someone’s wack protest selfie. So let me be clear: this ongoing systemic brutality by police is racist, it’s sickening, and it’s unsurprising.’

Lorde stepped out on a rare outing with her boyfriend, Justin Warren, in her home city of Auckland, last month.

The last time the songstress and her Universal Music executive beau, 41, were pictured together was way back in March 2019.

And the lovebirds proved they were still going strong as they shared a passionate kiss before walking hand in hand along the waterfront.

It comes a year and a half after their last public sighting together, when they were spotted shopping for homewares.

Lorde and Justin were first photographed frolicking on the beach together in 2016, but at the time Justin dismissed rumours they were dating.

He told the New Zealand Herald: ‘Ella and I have worked together for years and we’re good friends. Any rumours of us being “a pair” are ridiculous.’

But in the years since, they have toured the world together and Justin has even been spotted near the songstress’ $2.8million villa.

Lorde achieved international fame at 16 years old when her single Royals, from the album Pure Heroine, became a worldwide hit.

Her sophomore release, 2017’s Melodrama, is considered one of the best pop albums of the decade, according to critics.

The death of her dog Pearl last October slowed down the roll-out of her third album.
