Shawn Mendes says it is his ‘first time ever truly being in love’ as he gets candid about relationship with Camila Cabello: ‘I felt my heart open’
They say that you never forget your first love.
And Shawn Mendes doesn’t have a reason to let that slip his mind.
The 22-year-old singer sat down for an interview with pop legend Elton John for VMAN where he discussed his ongoing relationship with Camila Cabello and the lessons that he’s learned from it so far.
In it, the Canadian crooner confessed that his relationship with the 23-year-old Havana hitmaker was his ‘first time ever truly being in love.’

Mendes elaborated on his statement, saying that, ‘When I was able to sit and let my world stop spinning and come still, this stillness came over me and I realized, you know, when it comes to matters of the heart, we don’t need to be experts.’
The songwriter felt that the relationship was also very artistically fulfilling for him, noting that many emotional boundaries that he had in place were removed through his 23-year-old girlfriend’s presence.
‘I felt my heart open…This is the first time I felt that I had art coming through me.’
John agreed with the sentiment, stating that Cabello ‘seemed to have come along at a really important time in your life and career…I feel like she has been a very calming influence on you.’

Mendes also opined that his girlfriend came at a point where he felt that he needed support as his career was taking off, and that she brought him back down to earth as a person, stating ‘I felt a little bit alone out there and she changed that for me.’
He also spoke about how Cabello’s closeness with her family made him stop and reconnect with his own at a point where he was becoming distant from the people he grew up with.
‘[She’s] all about the family and friends, and it really made me like, “Oh, I should call my mom.”’
The Canadian native has been in a relationship with the Havana singer since July of 2019; initial reports of the couple pegged them as only dating each other for the publicity, which Mendes denied.

The singer’s second album, Illuminate, was received positively by critics and was supported by the singer’s second world tour.
In the following years, the songwriter made notable television appearances, including two separate times on the sketch comedy mainstay Saturday Night Live.
His fourth studio album, Wonder, is set to be released on December 4.
