    Steps from the wharf at Circular Quay where European passenger ships have docked for hundreds of years, a decadent French bistro is serving Sydneysiders a slice of Paris in the historic heart of the CBD. 

    Tucked away on the mezzanine of the five-star Sebel Quay West Suites, Quartier plates up Parisian cuisine flavoured with Australian ingredients in the shadow of the Harbour Bridge.

    Quartier – French for ‘neighbourhood’ – promises ‘familiar faces and friendly exchanges’ to the socialites and city professionals who dine at the opulent establishment, where practically every detail – even the cornice – is gold. 

    Crushed velvet chairs surround glass tables while dainty sofas line walls covered in romantic floral prints displayed in gold-leaf frames.

    But despite the decadent decor, prices are not exactly exorbitant for an eatery of such high caliber in such a prime location as The Rocks.

    Entrees start from $8 while the main draw card from the grill – fillet steak with sides of carrots and Brussels sprouts – will only set you back $44.

    Diners might start with crispy calamari or a simple buttered baguette, like the French do, before choosing between surf or turf – or maybe both.

    A popular choice is the grilled salmon served with steamed asparagus and a wedge of lemon, followed by ‘Charlotte’ – an indulgent dark and white chocolate French gateau – for dessert. 

    Early risers in time for the daily breakfast fare could gorge on buttermilk pancakes smothered in strawberries, bananas and white chocolate shavings – lashings of maple syrup optional.

    On Instagram, fine dining aficionados have expressed appreciation for the existence of a European eatery in the ‘true blue’ Harbour City.

    ‘That place looks like somewhere I’d gladly want to eat,’ one woman wrote under a photo of the opulent interior. ‘Such chic decor and the food looks amazing.’
