    Shoppers rage over a tiny detail on cans of Woolworths fruit salad – but can you spot what everyone is so annoyed about?

    Thousands of Australian customers are raging over a tiny detail spotted on cans of Woolworths home brand fruit salad.

    Passionate responses were sparked after Sydney shopper Debbie posted a photo in a consumer group on Facebook, showing two cans that appear identical at first glance.

    But while both come from Woolworths own range, only one is made in Australia.

    ‘A word of warning – the can on the right is product of Australia, the one on the left (new packaging, white writing, blue background) is not product of Australia,’ she wrote. 

    ‘Pays to check every time you buy something.’

    The identically sized cans have similar labels and content descriptions, but the old version is stamped with the ‘Made in Australia’ trademark while the new release is not.

    The green and gold triangular logo signifies products that contain Australian ingredients or has undergone production in Australia.

    To qualify for the ‘Product of Australia’ label, food must be ‘substantially’ made in Australia using Australian made or grown ingredients.

    The ‘Made in Australia’ label can mean all the ingredients are imported, but mixed, combined, baked, processed or packaged somewhere on Australian soil.

    A growing number of shoppers are opting for home-grown products in order to support farmers and local businesses struggling under financial hardship resulting from the pandemic.

    The photo, which has drawn 21,000 likes and thousands of comments since it was uploaded on Friday, has sparked strong responses from customers who say they are ‘outraged’ by the discovery.

    ‘Good warning, try to buy Australian products when you can,’ one woman wrote.

    ‘Woolworths seem to do this with a lot of their own brand products!’ another warned.

    A third added: ‘It’s all about making more money. Even fresh fruit is imported.’

    ‘That’s very cheeky Woolies, not cool’ said a fourth.

    On the Australian Made website, customers can access information about deciphering labels to understand the contents of the product.

    In an online statement Woolworths Group said: ‘Woolworths prides itself on working closely with Australian growers and farmers to ensure the best products are available to customers.

    ‘Sourcing 96 per cent of all fresh fruit and vegetables and 100 per cent of fresh meat from Australian farmers and growers.

    ‘Operating 995 stores across Australia, Woolworths relies on the 115,000 team members in stores, distribution centres and support offices to provide our customers with superior service, range, value and convenience.’

    Daily Mail Australia has contacted Woolworths for comment.
