Dominic Calvert-Lewin admits Everton were lucky to come away from Fulham with three points

‘On another day we would have been punished’: Dominic Calvert-Lewin admits Everton were lucky to come away from Fulham with three points after his two goals took him top of Premier League top scorers list

    • Everton ended their three-match losing run with a 3-2 victory at Fulham
    • Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored twice to take his Premier League tally to 10
    • But the striker admitted Everton were fortunate after poor second-half display
    • Fulham missed a penalty before Ruben Loftus-Cheek reduced the arrears
    • Everton were forced to hold on in the closing stages to secure all three points

Dominic Calvert-Lewin moved top of the Premier League scorers chart but admitted Everton were fortunate to come away from Fulham with all three points.

The England striker netted twice in Everton’s 3-2 win on Sunday afternoon to move into double figures for the league campaign and above Tottenham‘s Son Heung-min on the leaderboard.

But Everton, who ended a run of three straight defeats, were made to work hard by Scott Parker’s team in the second-half at Craven Cottage when the points had seemed assured.

Calvert-Lewin told BBC Sport: ‘I am pleased but the most important thing was we got the three points. I thought in the second half we didn’t play well, we didn’t have much of the ball.

‘In the first-half we did well to get the lead and we should have continued that. But on another day we might have got punished for not playing well enough in the second-half.

‘The most important thing was to get back to winning ways and we build from here.’

Calvert-Lewin gave Everton the lead from close range after just 42 seconds, only for Bobby Decordova-Reid to draw Fulham level on 15 minutes.

Calvert-Lewin duly restored the visitors’ lead just before the half-hour and Abdoulaye Doucoure made it 3-1 before half-time.

But Everton’s attackers became more and more isolated after half-time as Fulham finally asserted themselves.

The hosts won a penalty but Ivan Cavaleiro slipped and sent the kick flying over the bar. Ruben Loftus-Cheek did reduce the arrears but Fulham were unable to grab an equaliser.

Calvert-Lewin added: ‘I think the first-half was a representation of me benefiting for a new system where I am getting chances from wide areas, crosses coming in. That’s what I like, to be in the right area at the right time.

‘It was a game of two halves, really. In the second-half, we didn’t have much of the ball and it was more about digging in and winning fouls and free-kicks.

‘It was more of a lonely role but we dug in and got the win.’on
