‘I felt a huge shame’: Former Australian Idol star Ben McKenzie reveals he ‘lied to producers’ after a ‘traumatising’ attack left him with a ‘dislocated jaw’ on the singing show

He rose to fame on season five of Australian Idol in 2007.

And last week, Ben McKenzie (now Fraser) revealed that he was physically attacked by a member of the public during his time on the show.

Appearing on former judge Mark Holden’s podcast Our Idol Archives, Ben explained that at the time he received scrutiny from the public over his sexuality.

‘People were sending me letters on the internet telling me to kill myself, at age 16,’ he said.

‘It was a mixture of people wanting to marry me and have children with me, and then the opposite of that, which was “you should end your life, you homo”,’ Ben revealed.

He went on to reveal that while out with friends one night he was ‘physically attacked’ and left with a ‘dislocated jaw’.

‘The week before I left [Australian Idol] because I was young and rebellious, I went out with a bunch of people who I just met for a walk and I was physically attacked and had my jaw dislocated,’ he said.

Ben revealed that the event was ‘traumatising’ and he ‘struggled to leave the house at night’ for many years afterwards.

‘I was not highly femininely dressed in any shape or form,’ he added. ‘So it showed me that people are ready to attack people regardless of what they even look like or how they present.’

Despite his injuries, Ben still took to stage to perform on Australian idol, but he kept his injuries a secret from producers.

‘I felt a huge shame around the fact that had happened, so I lied to the producers about it.

‘And then they found out that I had lied, and they came down on me like a ton of bricks about the fact I had lied to them, and it was like, “I’m a child!” I was ashamed that that had happened to me.’

However, he admitted that being ‘open and honest’ about what he was going through at that time, feels ‘like a step in the right direction’.
